Episode 208.5 - Minisode 208.5
Elektra Boogaloo replied to JulyDiaz's topic in How Did This Get Made?
I don’t see a thread for this week’s minisode so I will just post here. I am very pleased for Cambert and his ball theory. i am not usually a person who boycotts movies but I knew a woman with dissociative identity disorder (it is not called “multiple personalities”) who was VERY distraught by SPLIT. I am told that they are often bullied and ostracized because SO MANY movies present them as murderers. When in truth, most people develop dissociative identity disorder to dissociate from extreme trauma. That is, they are mor likely to be the victims of horrible crimes than then perpetrators. Anyway, I am sure SPLIT and GLASS are hot messes. But I had to skip the movie bitches laughing about it. It doesn’t seem fun to me. Also like, who do you think you are trying to do “multiple personality serial killer” better than PSYCHO. I say boo fuck you to M. Night Shamalayn. -
Wasn't the knife from THE SHADOW in this?

Episode 209 - The Snowman: LIVE! (w/ Erin Gibson, Bryan Safi)

I will admit to being 100% done with complaints about yelling since "Can't Stop the Music" dropped and everyone said Cameron Esposito was awful but Pete Holmes was fine. (Check out that thread. It was wild.) I have definitely heard Jason describe HDTGM as "people yelling about bad movies" so I don't really understand why people are shocked. I know sometimes the volume or levels or whatever on the live eps are off. This is why some people say they prefer the in studio episodes. But my only real "solution" to the problem is a) don't listen or b) adjust your volume. I agree with Cameron H that it's not really constructive. It's also not really a correction or omission which, in theory, is that the boards are for. (Except we go off topic all the time.) I do agree with the criticism that they didn't go into the plot of the movie , which they usually do. I'm still not really sure who the killer is. But it sounds like they were so confused that it was a special circumstance. ETA: Also, we all know Taylor Anne is here to burn the fucking place down, not to make friends. -

We need someone from Norway to answer this important question. Also, did anyone else ever watch that internet video from like a decade ago that goes, Norway! More like Snore-way. I kept thinking about that and now I have the dumb song going through my head. -

First of all, you looked up about the weird head cutting weapon so I think you win this week. But I don't think it was Val Kilmer's part that wasn't filmed. Because they could hire another actor to do it. There must have been budgetary or scheduling conflicts with the movie? I've tried to listen to the Flop House but I can't get into it. HDTGM is my bad movie podcast. -

I am aware of the genre. Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is kind of part of that, though he was Swedish, I think. But that was another series I couldn't handle. Maybe I just hate crime fiction. I mean, at least Norway people don't actually go out and commit murder, apparently. So they are winning there. -

Oh I thought it was only lesbians whose voices people hated. Way to branch out. So I did not watch this movie. I did not understand much of the podcast, but it sounds like I wouldn't understand it even if I saw it. I read a couple of true crime books lately, and I'm really kind of sick of how media makes serial killers seem cool (no snowman pun intended) and smart. Or the whole Ted Bundy was hot thing on Twitter. I can't. But anyway, I don't know anything about Norway but I was listening to this thinking "are there really that many serial killers running around Norway?" I thought it was a safe place to live. So I found some Norway crime statistics and it says 24 people were murdered in Norway in 2015 (the most recent available data). By comparison, the FBI reports the United States had 15,696 murders that year. I think Jo Nesbo has murdered more fictional people than have actually been murdered in Norway. I don't know where I'm going with this, but I think it's weird that we WANT violence where there isn't violence because it's "interesting"? -

Welcome! Thanks for the info. I had never heard that before. But I remember being told in Catholic school that taking your own life was the greatest sin because you were rejecting God's gift of life. And I was like, well cancer attacks your own body too but nobody blames you for cancer or says "she cancered herself to death." Anyway, I'm not super religious anymore but I remember our teacher taking the class aside and saying, "But God is also omnipotent and would know what kind of pain you were in and take that into account." I liked that version better. -

This is a great idea, sign them and auction for charity, maybe Emily’s List? (I know June is affiliated with them). Or NAMI since we are talking about mental health. -

Thanks guys. I am sending virtual hugs, etc. i actualky did have to describe this podcast to my therapist, because she is all about like, coping in advance. And I was going to do something stressful (it involves seeing my parents) and she was like, you should put some episodes of that podcast on your phone. What is it again? And I was like, oh it’s kind of silly, it’s these comedian friends talking about bad movies they watch. I guess I was kind of sheepish and she said it makes sense, because when I feel isolated (which I do Around my parents or when I’m depressed) I can listen to friends talk and laugh, and it sort of simulates having friends in the room without me having to do any emotional work/or get stressed—because I am an introvert and usually people drain me. Plus movies are meant to be escapist. That is why I love storytelling and work with books. But books are my job so sometimes even when I’m reading for fun, it feels like work. I don't know, I was kind of stunned by this summation. I kind of thought I was just a weirdo. I would also definitely include all of you as stress free friends! And, because I can’t be serious for long stretches, I too thought people were sending in their stuff to get free promotion which made me wonder, should I be sending in books I worked on? Am I an idiot for not thinking of this before Paul figured out the game? -

Hi guys, I was kind if tearing up about the suicide. Long-time posters might remember I had a depressive episode about two years ago and my doctor put me in the hospital. What I learned there is that mentally ill people are some of the nicest, most sensitive folks and we have terrible mental healthcare in this country (I heard there was a doc about it at Sundance this year and I can't wait to see because it's a problem that needs some work). Anyway, if you are depressed and reading this, please do call a hotline or someone you love. I know a lot of people don't like to use the phone now days but those people volunteer for this. They want to talk to you. And, tbh, it couldn't make you feel worse, could it? Anyway that was more serious than I wanted. I am excited about THE SNOWMAN. It looks awful and I don't really understand the appeal of Fassbender. (As an actor, please don't comment about penis size, weirdos.) Does he have more teeth than other people, I want to know. -

She was definitely not biracial. They said mixed race, right? That's still not really accurate. I mean, she was white enough to marry the crown prince of England. And they freaked out that Camilla was a commoner in this century. So that's about as white as they come. -

Also if being a ginger in Britain is so bad then how come Ginger Spice was considered hot and Doctor Who always wants to be ginger when he regenerates? -
Episode 208 - Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance LIVE! (w/ Casey Wilson)
Elektra Boogaloo replied to JulyDiaz's topic in How Did This Get Made?
About Queen Charlotte. She was the wife of George III (of madness fame). She is believed to have had African ancestry, and people commented on her "negroid" features when she was Queen. In the clip, the queen says only one painter, Ramsay, showed her "real" features. That's not true. The painter they mean is Allan Ramsay and he was an abolitionist. He actually accentuated Charlotte's so-called "negroid" features as a way to promote Abolition. It was a form of propaganda since the portraits were sent around to all the colonies. Here is some more on the significance of her paintings from PBS. But the scene where the Queen talks about her with Meghan is odd. It might be a nice gesture to say "hey, we all come from Africa" or something like that. But it's not like the Queen knows what it is like to be an African American person. (I'd argue she doesn't even know what it's like to be a person period since her life is so unlike anyone else's.) Nor would she and Harry be considered "mixed race". Charlotte was six generations ago from the Queen, eight for Harry (assuming his dad was Charles haha!). And it was several more generations removed from Queen Charlotte. At a certain point, like, come on. https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/secret/famous/royalfamily.html -

There is also a very bland toffee flavored gluten free cookie, which I eat because my immune system is stupid and doesn't want me to be happy. I think part of the joy of Girl Scout Cookies, aside from helping girls, is that you order them and you forget about it and then like a month later they show up like magic. Otherwise you could just buy cookies at the store, you know? also, you can eat an entire box of cookies yourself in one sitting and not feel bad about yourself--BECAUSE YOU'RE HELPING YOUNG GIRLS. Re: the Harry and Meghan thing. I saw this at B&N yesterday. Their eyes are following me. -

There is definitely a person who pulls the comments from the message board for Paul. Because they are often truncated and I recall Paul mentioning who it is. But right now I am only thinking Nate Kylie but I feel like he is the researcher and I am wrongfully accusing him. It's difficult for me to remain mad when I can’t remember who I should be mad at. -

I am angry Paul didn't find out if Dan is the forum poster but I am willing to let that slide. Like some of you weirdos would figure out his IP or whatever. But Cameron! They used part of your post about champions but cut out the part on David and Goliath! Makes it sound like you are making shit up. I am starting a #Justice4Cameron campaign. Please donate. -

So I went and read possibly!Daniel’s post in the Lake House thread. Didn’t realize it was a poem. Why wasn’t this read in corrections and omissions at least? He must have been devastated to not win no prize. -
It is sad we didn’t get to hear June’s hair talk. Should they do it AGAIN?

You know, I bet it’s just some other guy named Dan and he delights in pretending he is Daniel Radcliffe. It’s a bit. It has very little pay off, but some people are not professional comedians for a reason, right? -

Will Ferrell did beer commercials in Sweden. The Jim Dale audiobooks are very good. But I saw everyone freaking out that Harry Potter was with Jason and I thought, "but maybe Jim Dale is Jason's Harry Potter and Radcliffe is some upstart youngun." Also Jason is in show business so I am sure he knows how to play it cool. I still want to know if it was Daniel who posted Dragon Blade in our movie recommendations thread (and also, randomly, a theory about the Lake House). IS HE ONE OF US? Did you even ask, Paul? Jesus. Think about us for a change. The poster was originally "dandandan" and he changed his name after I suggested he might be Daniel Radcliffe. Suspicious? Yes. Am I stalking him? Again, I am not sure. -

So Wikipedia says Mel Gibson was originally going to be John Cusack’s part. ... do we think that version would be better or worse?
