  1. Thoughts about "Male-equin" I think we keep with the theme of the mannequin being from the past some how. Mannequin one was from Egypt (why she was white, who knows) and Mannequin 2 was from medieval Germany. So I'm going to suggest Zac Efron gets turned into a mannequin during the Victorian era where he's all dressed up like a dandy. Efron is a real rake (TM Adam Arkin in "Lake Placid") and some witches curse him to be a mannequin until he can learn to respect women. Kim Catrall and Kristy Swanson work in a department store in Philly with their friend Hollywood's son (Tituss Burgess). They spend the first 1/3rd of the movie talking about how the Efron-mannequin doesn't have a dick and making crude jokes. Jason can write all of these. Catrall jokes if he had a dick he'd be a perfect man, because he's attractive and he shuts the eff up. Presto-chango, Efron becomes a real boy. But whenever he pisses the girls off, he turns into a mannequin again. Hilarity ensues. Finally Catrall and Swanson realize they want real guys (played by Paul Scheer and Jason Mantzoukas--Steve Agee can have a part only if he tells me about Guardians of the Galaxy 2). But, in our happy ending, Efron realizes the one he really loves is Tituss Burgess and the two of them float off in a hot air balloon together, dressed in puffy shirts.
  2. And she's just a Peasant Girl so...
  3. I looked up the name "Jessie" on some baby name sites because it doesn't seem super Germanic to me. I have a hard time believing some medieval peasant was named Jessie. According to the sites I found, it's of Hebrew origin (the feminine of Jesse). And was most popular in the 1880s. Sadly the baby name records don't go into medieval times. But here is a list of some medieval German names. Francesia is one listed. I know some Francesca's who go by Chessy. It's kind of a stretch but that's the closest I can get. I LOVED June's rant about how creepy it is that a beautiful, silent, immobile woman is so sexy to men. I heart June. I'm glad she's back. As I said int he mini-sode thread, this is one of those movies I watched a lot as a kid. I really, really loved Hollywood. He was my favorite. As an adult, I can see how some people might see what he did as a caricature. Or a stereotype. But I think the fact that Meshach Taylor was so loveable is what makes it work. In someone else's hands it would've been cringe-inducing. He was also my favorite on DESIGNING WOMEN. And I am beyond sad that Meshach Taylor has died. I'm also sad at the dearth of animated gifs of him that I have been able to find.

Eff yeah Mannequin 2! I'm probably the only person who has seen this one many times but never seen the first. This movie was on tv a lot when I was growing up and I liked it because Kristy Swanson was Buffy (before SMG). Two Buffys in a row! Also if you don't know "Designing Women" you need to binge it immediately. Regarding "Charles in Charge." I question Paul's interpretation of the house being Charles' jurisdiction. The theme says he's in charge of our days and our nights and the kids spend the day in school, right? Even if that's just at home, does that mean "Charles in Charge" is some kind of fascist state? He's our fuhrer and the rest of us have no say? I don't think this is a good message to send to children.

EPISODE 107 — Lake Placid: LIVE!

I'm staying in a hotel this week. And I just thought I'd let you know I always look in the little booklet to see if the hotel will provide tampons now. (There's usually a list of stuff they have, like razors, shoe shine kit, shower caps, whatever.) Thanks, How Did This Get Made!

    Episode 139 - Simply Irresistible

I like Tom Hiddleston just fine. I mean, we're pretty much raised to find English accents attractive here. But I confess I didn't see the appeal of Loki at all. His hair was all greasy and he smirked a lot. Plus the whole trying to conquer the world thing really put me off. Anyway: why isn't the crab one of the Avengers? It's magical. It lives in New York. I'd rather see it play Doctor Strange than Cumberbatch. So...? LET'S MAKE THIS HAPPEN.

    Better movie.

Who have been your favorite guests?

I also support the PFT, Nicole Byer, etc love fest. But I'd also like to add: Bobby Moynihan (the "Over the Top" episode is one of my most listened to), Rob and Nate Coddry, Wyatt Cenac (Phoenix I'm sky-f--king you!), Amy Schumer Retta and Michael Ian Black. I really love the Pete Holmes' "88 Minutes" episode, but had trouble with him in "Can't Stop the Music." I think his joy is very infectious but in a live show he can get off topic very easily. I think Dan Harmon was very funny in the "Jack Frost" episode. Sometimes I find him difficult to listen to. I think he's very smart and I loved 'Community' but he can get dark. I think having him on for a kid's movie was a good move.

I agree that it's not OUT OF THE QUESTION that she'd buy from the Greenmarket. It just seems odd that she wouldn't deal directly with the farmers at wholesale prices instead of actually going to the market herself. Also, the Greenmarket is only open four days a week so what does she do the other days? Sell stale food? Maybe that is why the restaurant is failing?

Have you guys noticed that the DVD cover for this movie has a photo of SMG that is aggressively not FROM the movie (I recognize it as a Buffy promo shot). Like they aren't even trying to promote the actual content (probably smart). Buffy image:

How long do we think it will take for someone to make a joke about the old guy giving SMG crabs? I mean, it's right there.

That's what makes it such a great song. Technically it's about Scott Baio babysitting a group of kids who he should not be sleeping with, but he probably is. "Of my days AND my nights."

    Episode 138.5 - Minisode 138.5

I was obsessed with Buffy and had a website about it and would buy magazines to scan them. Yet I still refused to see this movie. I congratulate Paul on being braver than me. I remember the costar dissing it and saying she wished she hadn't done it. But boo to Paul for missing the opportunity to say his favorite theme song is the rap version of HDTGM. Suck it, haters. It rules.

    Ask Paul!

Paul, I've read the People Who Eat Darkness. What do you want to talk about?
  16. Has anyone else seen this movie? I know it flopped at the box office. (http://www.moviefone.com/2015/12/13/box-office-in-heart-of-the-sea-sinks/ ) I'm watching it now. I've read the book which I enjoyed but I'm baffled at how Ron Howard managed to make this story so BORING. It's a story about about old timey whalers lost at sea who EAT EACH OTHER. How do you make cannibalism DULL? There's like this frame story where our beloved Breecey Gleesey just sits there and gives exposition every time he's on screen to a fictitious version of Herman Melville? Like everyone just loves that guy who wrote that book they were forced to read in high school? Ugh. I feel bad for him again. No one should have to talk to Herman Melville that much. GET TO THE PART WHERE THEY START SHOOTING AND EATING EACH OTHER. It's literally an hour into the movie before the whale even attacks and the boat even sinks. Did they think people wanted to see some real old timey whaling?!? I'm baffled by all these choices.

Pretty sure Leo lost a lot of weight for "The Revenant." And an article I Googled to confirm this mentioned "Dallas Buyer's Club" as another. Also, on the opposite side, there is Sly Stallone in "Cop Land."

BONUS: A Conversation with Mel Brooks

I'm sad no one has posted a manip of the Solarbabies poster with "Almost a Movie" on it.
  19. Since the Iliad was part of an oral tradition, shouldn't a TRUE first edition just be an old, blind Greek guy telling it to you? I haven't seen this movie yet but I'm pretty sure it'd be better if the Boy Next Door just carried an old man over his shoulder and gave him to JLo.

In the Heart of the Sea (2015)

RIGHT? Like we already get the story through... the story so adding an extra layer of exposition? Inexplicable. These guys read "Moby Dick" and thought, "this needs to be denser."
  21. I thought Dennis Quaid was great in this movie.

In the Heart of the Sea (2015)

I'm not saying a whale couldn't easily kill you if it wanted to--I have seen Blackfish and orcas are much smaller than Sperm whales. I'm saying it's highly unrealistic to say that a whale would leave its normal migration pattern to follow a bunch of humans in boats. You know, just to fuck with them whenever they're at a low point. Because once Chris Hemsworth decides he doesn't want to kill the whale (spoilers), the whale is like "I'm cool with you now, bro." I mean, in the book they speculated the whale originally attacked the ship because they were hammering the hull, and it confused the whale's echolocation. But the whale doesn't continue to harass them after the hammering is done and the boat is sank. It's NOT naturally violent. I think it's dangerous to try to ascribe these human motivations to animals. Like it's just being a whale and you're trying to stab it--the guy with the harpoon is the asshole, you know? Do I sound like June in the Monkeyshines episode? If so, I am okay with that.

In the Heart of the Sea (2015)

I mean, the book is. Maybe the movie isn't. I'm more than 2/3rds in and nothing interesting has happened yet. But the whale *is* following them across the Pacific, like it's from Jaws 4. Which is amazing. Because... like it's a whale. One of the most docile creatures on earth. Like "Oh noes! It's the whale! It might... not eat us because it's a vegetarian creature that basically keeps to itself!!" ETA: An hour and a half into the movie is the first mention of cannibalism. Poor Brendan Gleeson has to give a monologue about it.

    Episode 137.5 - Minisode 137.5

Fuck Rankin he's my list favorite character in the history of fiction and they gave him another goddamn dragon too! I deserve a dragon more! To be fair, there is A LOT of issues with the consistency and the special effects. Some of that is because it's the 90s and they just can't do good special effects. But I don't think they had a script supervisor at all. Because there is a lot of people looking different in each take or like you can see stuntmen hiding when you're not supposed to be able to see them. I think the young kid has braces at one point.

Started Dragonheart just now. I think they took the same approach to accents as DungeonSiege. Update: ... I think I kind of liked this one, guys. I mean I have notes but it's only like half a page.
