I have a question about the number of balls in a snowman. So as the majority of us are from North America and if we were asked to draw a snowman we'd draw a three balled snowman. Head, body, and legs. However, as I soon discovered after moving to Japan, not every country does this. In fact Japan and Korea both do two ball snowmen, head and body. Throughout the film we see nothing but two ball snowmen. The killer even uses a two ball snowman as his calling card. Yet, if you look at the original Norwegian book cover and movie poster they use aĀ three ball snowman. From what I gather Norway is a three ball snowman country. However, the director of the film and a lot of people involved in it are British and England is a two ball snowman country. Were they unaware of this fact? Did they see the original stuff and just ignore it? Or does Norway go both ways when it comes to snowman balls?

We need someone from Norway to answer this important question.Ā

Also, did anyone else ever watch that internet video from like a decade ago that goes, Norway! More like Snore-way. I kept thinking about that and now I have the dumb song going through my head.

I was also wondering if the 15-20% that wasn't filmed was due to it involving a bit more of Val Kilmer's character and he just wasn't able to do it since he was still recuperating from his medical ordeal. Yet when reading further this film seemed to be done in order to fully take advantage of Norwegian tax incentives to film there, leading to a rushed production. What I read also said that great care was taken to REMOVE any trace of Norwegian accent's/writing, I'm assuming because of the rushjob to finish this movie and the actors having no real time to prepare accents. Finally after hearing that Jennifer Lawrence was the original choice for the female lead, the death scene makes sense as when I watched this a few months back, it was really vague as to if she was dead or just dazed from what just happened to her, which depending on how this did at the box office could have left an option for her to return in the sequel.

First of all, you looked up about the weird head cutting weapon so I think you win this week. But I don't think it was Val Kilmer's part that wasn't filmed. Because they could hire another actor to do it. There must have been budgetary or scheduling conflicts with the movie?

I've tried to listen to the Flop House but I can't get into it. HDTGM is my bad movie podcast.

I'll just add that Norwegian/Scandinavian art and literature is quite often dark af -- serial killers, existential detectives, gruesome bloody scenes, etc. It's also the home of Satanic-based death metal music, even though most of the country is really quite secular. I've read a lot of Nesbo's books (including this one), but also many similar Swedish and Icelandic books. Basically what I'm saying is, this is a genre.Ā It's not a Jo Nesbo thing. My theory is that it's about the long dark winters and maybe Nordic/Viking mythology.Ā

Anyway I haven't listened to the ep yet (nor watch the movie) but as I said in the mini-ep thread I'm quite curious because the book is very good. I'm in for a fun weekend lol

I am aware of the genre. Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is kind of part of that, though he was Swedish, I think. But that was another series I couldn't handle. Maybe I just hate crime fiction. I mean, at least Norway people don't actually go out and commit murder, apparently. So they are winning there.

  4. Oh I thought it was only lesbians whose voices people hated. Way to branch out.

So I did not watch this movie. I did not understand much of the podcast, but it sounds like I wouldn't understand it even if I saw it. I read a couple of true crime books lately,Ā  and I'm really kind of sick of how media makes serial killers seem cool (no snowman pun intended) and smart. Or the whole Ted Bundy was hot thing on Twitter. I can't.

But anyway, I don't know anything about Norway but I was listening to this thinking "are there really that many serial killers running around Norway?" I thought it was a safe place to live. So I found some Norway crime statistics and it says 24 people were murdered in Norway in 2015 (the most recent available data). By comparison, the FBI reports the United States had 15,696 murders that year. I think Jo Nesbo has murdered more fictional people than have actually been murdered in Norway.

I don't know where I'm going with this, but I think it's weird that we WANT violence where there isn't violence because it's "interesting"?

    Hi Paul & all,

Long time listener, first time poster and hesitant to do so but the minisode struck a personal nerve and I feel compelled to educate.

Ā TheĀ updated terminology is ā€œdied by suicideā€ not ā€œcommitted suicideā€ since the word ā€œcommittedā€ implies the person did something immoral or sinful. A simple way to minimize the stigma surrounding mental illness and suicide is to be mindful of the words one uses in speaking about it.Ā Thank you for spreading awareness and providing resources for those struggling, but please be mindful of the words being used.

Welcome! Thanks for the info. I had never heard that before. But I remember being told in Catholic school that taking your own life was the greatest sin because you were rejecting God's gift of life. And I was like, well cancer attacks your own body too but nobody blames you for cancer or says "she cancered herself to death."

Anyway, I'm not super religious anymore but I remember our teacher taking the class aside and saying, "But God is also omnipotent and would know what kind of pain you were in and take that into account." I liked that version better.

Dear Paul, please sign the copies of Transformers that someone keeps sending you and sell them to fans for charity. I'd gladly pay twenty bucks or so for one, as long as I don't have to watch it again.

This is a great idea, sign them and auction for charity, maybe Emilyā€™s List? (I know June is affiliated with them). Or NAMI since we are talking about mental health.

  7. Thanks guys. I am sending virtual hugs, etc.Ā

i actualky did have to describe this podcast to my therapist, because she is all about like, coping in advance. And I was going to do something stressful (it involves seeing my parents) and she was like, you should put some episodes of that podcast on your phone. What is it again? And I was like, oh itā€™s kind of silly, itā€™s these comedian friends talking about bad movies they watch. I guess I was kind of sheepish and she said it makes sense, because when I feel isolated (which I do Around my parents or when Iā€™m depressed) I can listen to friends talk and laugh, and it sort of simulates having friends in the room without me having to do any emotional work/or get stressedā€”because I am an introvert and usually people drain me.Ā Plus movies are meant to be escapist. That is why I love storytelling and work with books. But books are my job so sometimes even when Iā€™m reading for fun, it feels like work.Ā

I don't know, I was kind of stunned by this summation. I kind of thought I was just a weirdo.Ā

I would also definitely include all of you as stress free friends! šŸ˜€

And, because I canā€™t be serious for long stretches, I too thought people were sending in their stuff to get free promotion which made me wonder, should I be sending in books I worked on? Am I an idiot for not thinking of this before Paul figured out the game?

  8. Hi guys,

I was kind if tearing up about the suicide. Long-time posters might remember I had a depressive episode about two years ago and my doctor put me in the hospital. What I learned there is that mentally ill people are some of the nicest, most sensitive folks and we have terrible mental healthcare in this country (I heard there was a doc about it at Sundance this year and I can't wait to see because it's a problem that needs some work). Anyway, if you are depressed and reading this, please do call a hotline or someone you love. I know a lot of people don't like to use the phone now days but those people volunteer for this. They want to talk to you. And, tbh, it couldn't make you feel worse, could it?Ā

    Ā

    Ā

Anyway that was more serious than I wanted. I am excited about THE SNOWMAN. It looks awful and I don't really understand the appeal of Fassbender. (As an actor, please don't comment about penis size, weirdos.) Does he have more teeth than other people, I want to know.Ā

to call Caroline biracial is....frankly ridiculous Ā to me.Ā  If we go by the reasoning that is given she's a descendent of a branch of the Portuguese royal family related to a 15th century Portuguese noble woman Margrita Dr Castro e Souza whose 9 generations removed. And SHE'S then supposed to be able to have HERĀ  ancestry traced back to the 13th century ruler Alfonso III and his lover Madragana who is BELIEVED to be a Moor. Never mind that the term Blackmoor often could just mean someone Muslim and not actually African.

We're tracing her supposed, possible ancestor back 5 centuries! You cannot call someone biracial for POSSIBLY having a person of color in their lineage.Ā  It's outrageousĀ  and frankly insulting. It goes beyond even the my great great grandmother was a 1/39 Native American so I'm practically a shaman bullshit some people pull.

    Ā

She was definitely not biracial. They said mixed race, right? That's still not really accurate. I mean, she was white enough to marry the crown prince of England. And they freaked out that Camilla was a commoner in this century. So that's about as white as they come.

  10. About Queen Charlotte. She was the wife of George III (of madness fame). She is believed to have had African ancestry, and people commented on her "negroid" features when she was Queen. In the clip, the queen says only one painter, Ramsay, showed her "real" features. That's not true. The painter they mean is Allan Ramsay and he was an abolitionist. He actually accentuated Charlotte's so-called "negroid" features as a way to promote Abolition. It was a form of propaganda since the portraits were sent around to all the colonies. Here is some more on the significance of her paintings from PBS. But the scene where the Queen talks about her with Meghan is odd. It might be a nice gesture to say "hey, we all come from Africa" or something like that. But it's not like the Queen knows what it is like to be an African American person. (I'd argue she doesn't even know what it's like to be a person period since her life is so unlike anyone else's.) Nor would she and Harry be considered "mixed race". Charlotte was six generations ago from the Queen, eight for Harry (assuming his dad was Charles haha!). And it was several more generations removed from Queen Charlotte. At a certain point, like, come on.

I know we've talked about this before but as a non-American here is my knowledge of these cookies. There are thin mints which are the most beloved, then you have a Filipino language cookie thatĀ has peanut butter, a small pacific island cookie which has coconut and is very controversial over likingĀ and tri-foils which are boring and plain and nobody really likes or cares about.

Am I just bitter and jealous I cannot eat them? Yes.

There is also a very bland toffee flavored gluten free cookie, which I eat because my immune system is stupid and doesn't want me to be happy. I think part of the joy of Girl Scout Cookies, aside from helping girls, is that you order them and you forget about it and then like a month later they show up like magic. Otherwise you could just buy cookies at the store, you know? also, you can eat an entire box of cookies yourself in one sitting and not feel bad about yourself--BECAUSE YOU'RE HELPING YOUNG GIRLS.

Re: the Harry and Meghan thing. I saw this at B&N yesterday.

  12. There is definitely a person who pulls the comments from the message board for Paul. Because they are often truncated and I recall Paul mentioning who it is. But right now I amĀ only thinking Nate Kylie but I feel like he is the researcher and I am wrongfully accusing him.Ā

It's difficult for me to remain mad when I canā€™t remember who I should be mad at.Ā

  13. I am angry Paul didn't find out if Dan is the forum poster but I am willing to let that slide. Like some of you weirdos would figure out his IP or whatever.Ā

But Cameron! They used part of your post about champions but cut out the part on David and Goliath! Makes it sound like you are making shit up.

I am starting a #Justice4Cameron campaign. Please donate.

Well, now youā€™ve got me curious...

I checked out his post forĀ The Lake House, and was pleased to discover that, not only was I the only person to like ā€œDanā€™sā€ post, I suggested he should have it submitted toĀ The New Yorker -Ā because it was written in a lovely free verse. Which means, while Elektra may be inadvertently stalking Mr. Radcliffe, he and I obviously share an ineffable,Ā metaphysical connection that none of you plebs can ever even begin to understand. We are bound for one anotherĀ like Keanu and Sandy-B.Ā Fact.

(And, if it turns out forum Dan isnā€™t, like,Ā DanĀ Dan, then thatā€™s cool, too. Iā€™l take any Dan in the storm really. Iā€™ll horde all the Dans.)Ā

    Ā

So I went and read possibly!Danielā€™s post in the Lake House thread. Didnā€™t realize it was a poem. Why wasnā€™t this read in corrections and omissions at least? He must have been devastated to not win no prize.Ā

You know, I bet itā€™s just some other guy named Dan and he delights in pretending he is Daniel Radcliffe. Itā€™s a bit. It has very little pay off, but some people are not professional comedians for a reason, right?

  16. Will Ferrell did beer commercials in Sweden.

The Jim Dale audiobooks are very good. But I saw everyone freaking out that Harry Potter was with Jason and I thought, "but maybe Jim Dale is Jason's Harry Potter and Radcliffe is some upstart youngun." Also Jason is in show business so I am sure he knows how to play it cool.

I still want to know if it was Daniel who posted Dragon Blade in our movie recommendations thread (and also, randomly, a theory about the Lake House). IS HE ONE OF US? Did you even ask, Paul? Jesus. Think about us for a change.

The poster was originally "dandandan" and he changed his name after I suggested he might be Daniel Radcliffe. Suspicious? Yes. Am I stalking him? Again, I am not sure.

  17. If the guest is Dan RadcliffeĀ Ā I will lose my shit. (See this movieā€™s thread in bad movie recommendations.)

Also, was I the only one who thought Cody was a man? I am shocked.Ā

Worried about the caller who thinks his sisterā€™s fiancĆ© is a dud. Like maybe she has a lot going on and a boring person is what she needs? Or maybe she doesnā€™t think heā€™s a dud?Ā

I love that the first Little Italy callerā€™s theory was basically ā€œsex pollen.ā€
