It's got decent action, but it goes overboard with trying to be a noir film. I still can't understand what type of accent Ryan Gosling was using and I'm amazed Nick Nolte can still talk after how much booze he's poured down his gullet. What's better is that it completely disregards history that can be discovered by a quick Google search, Mickey Cohen died in his sleep in 76, his boss Dragna wasn't assassinated but died of a heart attack in the 50s, and Nick Nolte's driver actually became Police Chief in the 70s all the way up to the Rodney King Riots.

this, this this! a million times this!

have you ever seen LA Confidential and thought "what this movie needs is less subtlety, more brutality and a shoe shine kid who gets caught in the stray fire of a confusing street based machine-gun fight."? well have ryan gosling, josh brolin, giovani ribisi and nick nolte got something for you.

there's this thing they keep talking about called "The War", apparently it's over and important for Brolin's character to stop fighting it.

Guys, I thought this was a fun time at the movies. Sometimes you just want to see a shoot-'em-up old school gangster flick. I'm surprised it was that low on Rotten Tomatoes.

Honestly, if we're going to do a noir, I must insist we do The Black Dhalia first. It is crazy nonsense stone cold bonkers and makes this movie look like a masterpiece.

It was fun, but I think it could have been better if they didn't try so hard to play it off as fact.

To be fair, every movie 'based on true events' uses dramatic license with the facts. It's not like The Untouchables or LA Confidential are going to get awards for accuracy any time soon.

but it clearly wanted to be taken seriously. Penn's mushy line delivery and Gosling's character (actually referred to as "a sheep in wolf's clothing") and the amount of cliche's deployed mean this is prime fodder for a good episode of HDTGM.

haven't seen black dahlia as it's reputation is so dire. pretty sure they would have had to defang the book very seriously to bring it to the screen.

Yeah but at least with The Untouchables the dates were right and Capone did go to prison for tax evasion and LA confidential was a based on a fictional crime novel. Gangster Squad doesn't even try to be accurate at times. The only other movie that may be more inaccurate is Saving Private Ryan.

I don't know. At least World War II happened.

Yeah but the whole story about how Matt Damon's character was found was nothing like the movie. Fritz Niland, the basis for Private Ryan, fought during the Normandy invasion and then bounced among the divisions where his other brothers were stationed. Upon coming to each one, he found out the brother had died before being told being escorted by the company priest to a plane where he was flown to London before heading back to the United States. There was no search party for him, he wasn't out in the middle of nowhere, he just basically walked up to a commanding officer and said "here I am" and went home.
