  1. I knew they were parodying something and that's what I always assumed too since I've never seen New York, New York.
  2. I'm also hoping for some Burt Reynolds solo action. Oh yea, I forgot about those! One of the couple that came to my mind was... the Boy Scoutz n da Hood episode when they sing "Springfield Springfield". Only because I just watched On The Town (with Gene Kelly & Frank Sinatra) so I finally understood the reference. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7CIgWZTdgw And "See My Vest" is a parody of "Be My Guest" from Beauty and the Beast. The "Garbage Man" song was a parody of "The Candy Man" from Willy Wonka.
  3. What's the 3rd one you can think of? Paint Your Wagon is not great..would have been cruel to make us watch the (almost) 3 hours of that.
  4. I didn't know this was a thing. So I'm excited, haha!
  5. I don't think I've heard of this one! But I can buy it too.. The only ones I have heard of.. was that (one of) the Kennedys could have been involved to cover up an affair. Since there were rumors of Robert Kennedy and JFK at one point having an affair with Marilyn. Or that the mafia murdered her to hurt the Kennedys. To send a message to Robert Kennedy to back off in his crusade against the mob.
  6. Yeah, I mean as soon as he was like "thanks for swiping that incriminating photo, how can I repay you?" right away she was like "well, I really like that tiara" haha Plus-- this is how she sees him when she finds out he owns a diamond mine. I couldn't help but laugh at this part.
  7. I don't think she was totally flirting with him. I think maybe she was naively being too friendly? But then I'm not sure since she seems to put on a facade of being a "blonde" cause she does know what to do to get what she wants. If anything she did dance and spend time with him when his wife wasn't around. And didn't discourage him. I wasn't sure what was going on. I didn't think she was going to cross a line with Piggy but felt like maybe her motive for hanging around Piggy still was so she could score some jewelry or something? lol. I don't hate on her wanting to be with a rich guy. It's no different than Gus wanting to be with her for her looks (I'm sure). Or even Dorothy for liking tall / dark/ handsome men. And forget Malone-Dorothy or Lorelei-Gus. I'm team Dorothy-Lorelei.. I liked their relationship the most. They may have been opposites and disagreed, but they really had each other's backs! and I'm down for conspiracy theories. I definitely think there was some shady-ness to her death.
  8. But I agree with SaraK.. I feel like having money was a requirement for Lorelei. Did she possibly like (love) Gus for other reasons? Maybe.. I mean Gus was nice. I don't think she'd put up being with a super rich dude if he was a jerk. I too thought when Piggy showed up that Lorelei would maybe pursue him and forget about Gus (if Piggy had more money than him). But then Piggy's wife showed up. I don't think she was into him, but was still into his wealth. So she didn't entirely back off. I think she only let him old-man flirt (and flirt back a little) to possibly try to get something out of it (diamonds, money, etc)? Which she almost pulled off. But I didn't think she was going to pursue him any further than that or totally cross a line. I thought this for a second too..
  9. Marni Nixon dubbed quite a few female singing voices in musicals (and usually uncredited ) She dubbed Audrey Hepburn's singing in My Fair Lady
  10. While I enjoyed other movies we've covered more than HSM...a lot of them don't necessarily have the catchiest songs (or even memorable songs). So to answer... I'd say "Get your head in the game" and "Bet on it" have been stuck in my head the most, lol. Before HSM though, I think the other movie that had more songs stuck in my head was JCS. "Everything's alright" "Heaven on their Minds"...and any of the ones with Judas singing.
  11. Which I want to point out that I agree what y'all said about It Follows on the podcast. I watched recently and man... that one got to me. I was freaked out for a while afterwards. Thinking I had something following me. And maybe still occasionally pops in my mind every now and then if I'm alone at night..
  12. I did really like the book. I read a lot of King's books growing up and remember The Shining and IT freaked me out the most. Know reading The Shining creeped me out way more than the movie did, so I always thought it could have impacted me more if it was closer to the book? Reading horror freaks me out more than horror movies generally do. I like watching horror but it takes a lot more for them to make an impact / keep me creeped out long after the movie is over.
  13. I listened to yesterday too. it was an enjoyable listen! I enjoy horror movies so it was cool to hear a discussion on modern horror and classic horror movies (and how some do or do not still hold up today). I'm on the same page as most of you on The Shining. I think it's a good movie, and still holds up and is re-watchable. But unsure if it really deserves to be considered one of the best horrors of all time, as many seem to think. I am a weirdo who did also enjoy the Garris mini-series of The Shining.. It may be a bit cheesy, but I did like that it followed the book more closely. Especially since in the book/ mini-series the character Jack didn't start out as a madman right away. I feel like with Kubrick's Shining.. Nicholson was crazy from the start and just got a little crazier being in the hotel. In the book and mini-series I like that you slowly see Jack going into madness. It's more scary seeing a more sympathetic person turn like that... vs seeing someone who already wasn't far off from doing something terrible to his wife and son. My sister told me to watch The Witch, since she really loved that one. I tried watching, but I don't think I was in the right mood for so I stopped only after watching the first 15 minutes. I keep hearing good things about it so I'll give it another try soon. I also haven't seen Crimson Peak. But have seen that it's on HBO Go right now, so I'll check that one out soon as well. I did want to see it in theaters but I never got the chance to. . Anyway.. it was a fun listen. And I now have a little list of movies I want to check out
  14. Nice pick- I watched this one a few months ago for the first time Looking forward to revisit and discuss with everyone.

    Musical Mondays - Week 18 - Gigi

Just wanted to point out... Gigi was directed by Vincente Minnelli (Liza's dad). He also directed An American in Paris (noting since we've made comparisons to).
  16. The bird ref reveal was amazing. I was laughing so hard.

    Musical Mondays - Week 18 - Gigi

I liked it, it made me want to watch more Gene Kelly movies. (why I watched The Pirate after, and I probably will watch more of his movies soon) The plot was a bit weak and Gene Kelly's character was slightly creeper-ish. His character was aggressively trying to get Caron's character to go out with him. So that was a bit off putting, but he was charming so I got on board once Caron's character did. That is why I think I could be a little more forgiving of Gigi if Gaston was a bit more charming and likeable. (And if Chevalier was out of the picture). Really loved all the dancing/choreography in An American in Paris, especially the very last ballet number. Having watched Gigi first, I had no idea Caron could dance/ was a ballet dancer.. So that made me confused why there wasnt much dancing in Gigi. Felt like a waste.

    Musical Mondays - Week 18 - Gigi

Yeah I watched An American in Paris after Gigi and thought the same. Why have Caron and not have her dance? It needed more dancing. And maybe someone more charming to play Gaston? Could've helped make me feel less creeped by the whole movie and actually care in the end if Gaston and Gigi got together

    Musical Mondays - Week 18 - Gigi

I agree with you guys, I was put off a bit and creeped out from the start. And also agree with everything Cam Bert said about the end. It really did fall flat. It did feel like it was supposed to be a big deal Gaston came back, but I didn't care. But throughout the movie, I was comparing Gigi to My Fair Lady. The songs in Gigi felt very similar in sound/style/etc to songs in My Fair Lady. Like the "Gigi" song when Gaston is talk-singing-realizing that Gigi has grown up / maybe he's into her..it reminded me of when Higgins (Rex Harrison) is talk-singing "I've Grown Accustomed to her Face" when he's realizing he misses/loves/cares for Eliza (Audrey Hepburn). And then the song at Maxims.. where everyone is gossiping, it reminded me of the song at the racetrack in My Fair Lady. With a big group singing and with all the pauses. Though songs really reminded me of MFL, I didn't love the music in this. The one that stuck with me the most from Gigi was "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" and that's mainly because it was creepy AF. I kind of remember some songs and what they were about but other than "Thank Heaven" I can't remember the melodies or any bits of lyrics.
  20. I've never seen Gigi. So bring it! I do love My Fair Lady (another Lerner & Loewe). BUT they're also responsible for Paint Your Wagon...so.. yeah.. haha. I'm interested in seeing where it lands on that scale.
  21. I love this podcast so much. I keep re-listening to all the eps and can't wait for more! I'd really love the Solo Bolo crew (Scotty Aucks & Benny Schwaz) to be guests at some point I was kind of thinking it was PFT too...but think you're right.

Musical Mondays - Week 17 - The Lure

I agree with Taylor...wouldve been better with more mermaids eating dudes! But I did like it, just didnt totally love it. And also think it would've been cooler if the musical aspect was if the mermaids were more siren-like. With the songs being their way to lure in guys to eat. The shopping song/scene was my favorite musical part of the movie. Otherwise the other songs /music scenes were meh to me. And yeah... prob would've enjoyed it better with Peter Dinklage as Mietek. Haha!
