I think she might've been going in that direction anyway, but Scott loves to add the visual. Every time he did it, I actually said out loud "Scott, this is not that kind of podcast."
-
About halfway through the episode, I started thinking about how weird it was to have an ep with nothing but characters, then remembered that Paul Rust is an actual real person. Which I think I can be forgiven for having forgot.

No, You Shut Up! is definitely coming back!

http://splitsider.com/2015/08/paul-f-tompkins-says-season-4-of-no-you-shut-up-premieres-this-fall/ Just in case you want a temporal marker to denote when episodes were recorded, there you go. Enjoy having that secret knowledge over recorded Paul next Monday! And, presumably, several more Mondays! Months of Mondays?- 1 reply

EPISODE 24 - Sports Club/Live at Largo
VajayjayLeno replied to JulyDiaz's topic in SPONTANEANATION with Paul F. Tompkins
The CAH ads remain an unending source of mystery for me and I was so hoping Paul would clarify. Because the hosts have complete control over which ads they do- Earwolf doesn't make anyone hawk something they don't want to. And yet, it feels like there's genuine concept and confusion in doing these ads! I keep wondering if CAH submitted these things to be used in the improv or just mentioned in the show, and he thought it would be fun to completely subvert that intention and just read them out with contempt or what the hell is going on. -
Questions--Forum Edition!

My first car was my parents' old Ford Ranger. My gf at the time named her car Carlton because she was (and still is) really bad with pun names so I figured my car should have a name. I made up a whole backstory that my car was A) a big nerd and 2) transgender so she transitioned to be a he (because all cars are born female) and named himself Aragorn. Because he's a Ranger.- 7 replies

Agreed. Paul's disclaimer got me all braced like I was in for something like HDTGM's Theodore Rex and Top Dog episodes, but it was fine. Honestly, I wouldn't have thought about it at all if he didn't say anything. But he's probably right to have disclaimed- SOMEONE would've complained, that theoretical asshole. -

Anyone else think Derek's PR voice sounded remarkably like Adam Scott's I Love Films voice? -
Oh geez, I hope Paul calling out Marisa Haynes doesn't backfire because the internet is full of shitty people. HGTDM folks are real smart though, they get jokes. So. Maybe it'll be fine.

Aw, man. Kickpuncher. I was gonna do the same thing but in an aggressively shitty and sarcastic way. You ruined EVERYTHING. -

EPISODE 22 - A Clown Cemetery

I mean, have any of us Android users actually stopped to consider that maybe we are garbage people? It might actually be true! I know I've suspected I might be for years. -

Furthermore, 100% of Howl listeners who use a mobile device to listen to podcast use iOS. That's just a fact. You can't argue with facts. (Honestly, it's a week after the Howl premium announcement and now I don't actually care that Android has been given the short shrift.[(what the fuck is a short shrift] I will just wait until I get an app to subscribe, it is not a terrible problem!) -
Do you think you'll ever have Janie on as a guest or would that be super weird?

I think a lot of complaints on the technical side are one of those things where it's something that should've been fixed before launch but will definitely be fixed if this is going to be a success, so I'm not actually worried too much about it. It does position Midroll/Earwolf to be a content gatekeeper rather than merely a content provider, though. Which is always a bitter pill to swallow. Podcasting, as a medium, has always been a very open, democratic thing and someone positioning themselves as the corporate entity controlling it is a really big shift. On the other hand, creating high-quality content isn't free for the creators and a lot of great content really probably is being left uncreated because of that limitation. It's a reflection of the great struggle of the internet at large and I don't think there's a satisfactory easy answer. I do believe that Midroll isn't doing this as a soulless corporate entity concerned only with money and that they really do have good intentions as part of their motivation. I hope, however, that they'll be flexible moving forward to really figure out what the best solution is.

No one has time for your terrible conspiracy theories.

I actually have the opposite question (which makes it more for Shannon I guess): are there any plans to allow the app to be an all-purpose podcast app that provides both access to the HOWL service, but also downloading of non-HOWL podcasts? I suppose it's like asking if Netflix will let me watch YouTube through Netflix, but still. It'd be convenient if they did.
-
Okay, focusing on HOWL the service, rather than HOWL the app (which I have a billion questions about, but can save them for Shannon), your point #3 about cleaning up the archives: CBB really is very foreboding and impenetrable at first glance. I tried multiple times unsuccessfully until I listened to Mike Detective and decided I 100% had to jump on board this laugh train. Part of the problem is that a lot of characs require some level of prior knowledge, which the service has now put behind a barrier. Do you anticipate curating a small portion of the paid archives for free listeners as sort of a Best Of (or at least, easiest to get into) sampler to help ease into the show?

By any Metric, Emily Haines is a great singer!

Good job, man. Way to dig deep.

The big one for me is: Android app?
-
As one of the 80% of smartphone owners who uses an Android phone, I reject all calls to stop whining. For too long, we silent majority have been treated as second class app citizens. Ignored by these elitist Hollywood jerks because we refused to bow down. Cast aside because we chose to be individuals. Crush underheel because we're too poor to buy an iPhone. No longer. I make my stand here. I refuse to pay for CBB anymore until Android has a Howl app.

I know Janet Varney's audible laughter when she's on has become a joy for a lot of Spontaneanationalists- do people laughing in the studio help the energy of the show or is it just sort of a thing that you don't really notice?
