Sylvester Stallone, Antonio Banderas and Julianne Moore star in Richard Donner's convoluted action thriller which happens to be co-written by the Wachowskis! How did this pairing not work that well?

How "Death Race 2000" hasn't made it onto HDTGM is beyond me. Set in a dystopian future, the most popular form of entertainment is the death race, a cross country race that also serves as government sanctioned population control. As the racers drive, they score points by killing pedestrians along the way. Each pair of racers have a specially modified car that fits their particular theme (two Nazis in a "buzzbomb" carmann ghia, a cowgirl/cowboy in a bull-shaped car with horns, etc). All the while, comically gory deaths ensue. In one scene, staff at a retirement home wheel their patients into the street for what Frankenstein (a part man part machine driver played by David Carradine) refers to a "euthanasia day." His hot headed rival, Machine Gun Joe Viturbo (played by Sly Stallone), makes it his mission to destroy him, and most of his own fans. The movie is produced by Roger Corman, who also produced 414 other horribly corny movies like "Big Bad Mama" and "Slumber Party Massacre." The full movie is currently available for free on YouTube. Do yourself a favor and watch this movie, even if not for the show.

Ever since the gang did Cobra, I've been hoping that they'd get around to Cliffhanger. All the insanity of Cobra and more, plus we get John Lithgow going crazy, the most dysfunctional group of hijackers I've ever seen, and the best first five minutes of any 90's action flick. Honestly, the first five minutes, just wow. So I saw this film when it first came out, and wasn't expecting much out of the first scene where they're taking Rooker and his girlfriend off the mountain. My interest was piqued though when her harness breaks and she starts to fall but I figured, "nah, they're going to rescue her." I was pleasantly surprised when the film did kill her off but had to wait until the film came out on VHS for me to confirm the best part. If you look at the old helicopter pilot during the tense scene when Sly is trying to rescue the girl, he's got a huge smile on his face, and when she finally falls, the camera cuts to him and he busts out laughing! Why this doesn't get more play I'll never know, but every person I've shown this scene to reacts with the same disbelief and "what the fuck?" attitude.

Just putting this one out there. I remember it being in theaters, but have yet to see it (will soon, it's on the Encore schedule), but I wanted to throw it out there since Stallone will soon become king of HDTGM: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6UNQB1Lo1s
