He started out as a villain whose whole persona was that he was a arrogant jerk who thought he was a fan favorite, even though in reality he was a heel and people were supposed to hate him. So he'd strut around and call himself the people's champion just to bait the crowd, but the dude was so charismatic that everyone started believing it. The crowd actually began to acknowledge that was the people's champion, and they just fed off of his bravado. Such an interesting turn around.

Hahahhahahaha I just died laughing when Joe was describing Avicii in the terms of the Zion scene in the Matrix:

 

Joe: "You know the scene in Zion where everyone is just like dancing and..."

 

Howard: "...Fighting in mid-air."

 

Everyone just agrees and moves on. This is why I fucking love this show because the mind of Howard Kremer is something to behold.

The Rock is the shit! I think he called himself the "People's Champion" because he started out in that Nation of Domination group with Farooq aka Ron Simmons. (Sidenote: Ron Simmons is like 70 years old and he's in better shape than I will ever be in my life.) It was supposed to be a rip on the Black Panthers or black militants in general, so they were always the bad guys (listen to the Yo! Is this Racist podcast to get some insight on how racist and homophobic wrestling is) and one of the things that the Panthers did is open up grocery stores, clothing stores and called them "The People's Grocrey Store" or "The People's Boutique". The Nation of Islam would do something similar and name businesses they opened with a "your" prefix. So, a grocery store would be called "Your Grocery Store."

 

But it was funny as he became a star in his own right, they added the Rock Bottom finishing move, b/c before his signature move was the People's Elbow.

Re: Gran Torino - Yes, the first draft did take place in St. Paul, home of a giant Ford plant and a massive Hmong population. The screenwriter Nick Schenk is from there and worked at the plant, where he met a lot of Hmong immigrants and was inspired to make the movie by listening to their stories.

Just to be pedantic The Rock never had a move called 'the brahma bull' it was jut one of his nicknames(like The peoples champ).

Just listened to this ep for the first time. Kept thinking that he sounded so much like Harris, so of course he was good friends with him.

 

So sad when he started joking about Harris's (not yet a reality) death
