Loose Cannons (1990)

Recommended Posts

Starring Gene Hackman and Dan Akroyd, here is the plot:

A film is found that features young German officer Kirk Von Metz (Robert Prosky) sleeping with Adolf Hitler. Years later, Von Metz is running for chancellor of West Germany and arranges for the murder of anyone who has seen the film. The killings take place in the Washington D.C. area, and police officers MacArthur Stern (Gene Hackman) and Ellis Fielding (Dan Aykroyd) are sent to investigate the crimes.

Ellis suffers from a multiple personality disorder, which is aggravated when he is confronted with violence. This results in several episodes where he blacks out and assumes the personalities of popular culture characters, including Popeye, Captain Kirk, and the Road Runner.

Andy Dick appears on some of the posters even though he was not in the film. Apparently at the time he was "getting a lot of work in print ads" whatever that means. Loose-Cannons.jpeg

Also of note: In May 2013, an employee at the Calgary, Alberta landfill discovered some film negative in the mounds of trash. He looked closer, and found images of a man kneeling over a gruesome murder victim. Thinking it could be a snuff film, or evidence in a crime, he submitted the negatives to the Calgary Police Services. After a short investigation, they recognized Dan Aykroyd, and contacted his agent for information, finally concluding that it was simply a discarded negative of Loose Cannons. The investigation was immediately closed, and everyone had a good laugh. Aykroyd jokingly told TMZ: "The movie should have been left in the landfill where it belongs."

My apologies for double posting, I should have done a search first. Consider this a humble bump.

The one thing I'll probably remember more than anything else about this movie is the godawful theme song that is played over the closing credits, sung by Dan Aykroyd and Katey Sagal of "Married with Children" and "Sons of Anarchy" fame. Probably one of the worst movie themes I ever heard, up there with Paul McCartney's dreadful theme to Vanilla Sky (can someone please explain to me how the eff that piece of noise pollution got nominated for a Best Original Song Oscar?).

Yeah, we definitely need more episodes focused on bad Dan Aykroyd movies, there are a lot. This would be a great double feature with "Doctor Detroit". That movie should come with a warning "May induce nausea and severe douche chills". This movie in particular has some really odd moments. For instance, the scene where Dan Aykroyd talks to Gene Hackman about foreskin still haunts me.

Even though this movie came out in 1990, it has a prime example of what you'd call the "ostensibly-hilarious 80's car chase" that goes on and on...and on...and on...with lots of squealing tires and loud terrible music. Come to think of it, that terrible "Dragnet" movie with Aykroyd and Tom Hanks had one too. Maybe too many crappy-ass filmmakers who loved "The Blues Brothers" mistakenly believed that Aykroyd + Car Chase = MONEY.

As a bump for the "Comedy About Buddy Cops, One of Whom is So Broken By Torture That He Blacks Out And Starts Impersonating Cartoon Characters, Recovering a Nazi Porn Movie", here's the credits theme song sung by Katey Sagal and Dan Aykroyd, which I think could best be described as "Concussed Members of Midnight Oil Are Hired to Write an 80's Bond Theme":
