You know why, Khan wanted to get a hold of the Enterprise in the first place don't you? there was a deeper story then what we got to see. a subplot that was cut from the film because of high production costs.

 

it was all a setup so he could get the ship and go back in time and buy this...

I would say this is Nicolas Cage at his prime. back when he had big caste dreams and fast moving cars and money to throw away.
