EPISODE 118 - Furious 7: LIVE

Recommended Posts

Universal was also home to Hal Needham. That means Dom both could and more importantly SHOULD be the illegitimate son of the Bandit himself.....Burt freakin' Reynolds. Driving is in their blood dude. I can see it now. Kurt Russell hires the team again to make an impossible cross-country drive. The Rock is like, "Nobody can drive THAT fast." But then Dom is all, (mumbling) "There's ONE man. (Mumbles) Family." Then Eastbound & Down by Jerry Reed starts playing. Burt would do it in a heartbeat, AND it would tie together the legacies of the 2 greatest car-themed franchises in all of time & space.

All right guys. I really thought they were going to get to this when they talked about Letty's footwear at Race Wars, but they didn't.

Β

So it's up to me now.

Β

Remember how everyone went on and on about Bryce Dallas Howard's character running in heels in Jurrasic World?

Β

Well, that's some bullshit, because Letty and Ronda Rousey's character did a lot more than run in heels. Check this shit out:

Β

x1qp4Fw.gif

Β

They seriously beat the shit out of each other all while in heels.

Β

But that brings me to another point. I get why Letty might have been wearing heels. She's trying to fit in, and even though they have some sort of physical altercation EVERYWHERE THEY FUCKING GO, she might not have expected to have gotten into a fight.

Β

But why the shit is Ronda Rousey wearing heels? She's supposed to be the badass bodyguard. Maybe she's supposed to be in the attire of the party, but still, I feel like heels were a bad choice.

Β

Also, right before this sequence, while Letty is fighting all the security people you see lain out around the room, Ronda Rousey is just mad-dogging her for, like, two minutes straight. Why the hell wouldn't she just be like, "Oh, I'm going to slip these things off before I beat your ass."

Β

Has no one in this production ever seen a fight between women at a club? What are the first two things that always go? Heels and earrings. Every. Goddamn. Time. And yet Rousey takes off neither before jumping into the fight.

Han is from America. The character was first in Justin Lin's 'Better Luck Tomorrow' then Lin got the job for Tokyo Drift and put Han in that.

He also tells Cara in the fourth movie that he's never been farther east than the Atlantic.

Β

But even if he wasn't American, he's definitely not Japanese. The actor is Korean (and doesn't look Japanese at all), and the awful last name "Seoul-Oh" has a more Korean construct than any other nationality.

Β

But, honestly, I don't care because that whole bit between Jason and Adam about Dom stealing his body from his parents was totally hilarious.

Β

Edit: I mean Korean-American. He was born in the US, but his parents are from South Korea.

As for Dom lifting the Hypercar. Many of those kinds of cars will be insanely light. Add in the fulcrum effect from only lifting the back and using the front wheels as a pivot point and he's lifting even less weight. There is still one factor that makes it at least somewhat unrealistic that Vin Diesel could lift the car, it is bullet-proof. Bullet-proofing adds a decent amount of weight typically as armor isn't light.

i was looking at the numbers for the whole series and they are bonkers ...

Β

total budget = 759 million

Β

total box-office = 3.9 billion (worldwide)

Β

its crazy ...

Β

(all numbers from wikipedia)

At this rate, the budget for 8 will be more than the box office for the first movie.

I saw this opening day, and just laughed and laughed. Like when they had an opening scene that was basically a Bugs Bunny cartoon including part of the building falling off behind Jason S. I was laughing so hard the woman in front of me turned around and gave me a death glare - geez, lighten up lady, this isn't Shakespeare.

Β

I also assumed that The Rocks daughter was the character from "The Game Plan" which is why she finds her way to the hospital alone and he can just leave to find her own way home without any protection in case Jason S decides to kidnap her.

Look, I know what I'm about to say is going to be controversial, but for me, Roman is this series' Jar Jar Binks.

Also, it wasn't brought up in the episode, but the crazy Ramsay jumping from one spinning car to another...Ho-leee Cow! I don't really have anything to say about, but it was neglected in the episode. Fister, I know you've got a gif of it. Hook us up, bro.

After recasting "The Island of Dr. Moreau," I feel like I should cast the rest of the Shaw family too.

Β

I'm thinking Helen Mirren and Malcolm McDowell as Ma and Pa Shaw. They can be the sort of matriarch and patriarch of this crime family, all the while moonlighting as these Cambridge-educated pillars of the community (sort of like Gus Fring in "Breaking Bad). Meanwhile, as far as younger ass-kicking British women, we can only really go with the very ass-kicking leading lady of "Edge of Tomorrow," Emily Blunt as Maggie Shaw, avenging sister of Owen and Deckard. Or, if she's unavailable, we can always poach Rebecca Ferguson from any future "Mission Impossible" films, because God knows she should be in basically everything from now on.

Β

Justin is gonna swoop in and make just be "8" before it gets released.

Oh man, you guys digressed into some Indiana Jones territory there for a second, and were confused about Temple of Doom as a prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark. Well, you got to understand the character arch Indiana is going through throughout the series. At the beginning of Doom, he’s still into archaeology for β€œfortune and glory.’ Throughout Doom however, he realizes that archaeology can have a deeper purpose and decides to save the village and get back their river rocks.

Β

This β€œfortune and glory” mentality is mostly absent by Raiders, and is totally at odds with the β€œthat belongs in a museum” Indiana we see in Last Crusade. So, the story arch of Indiana becoming a better person makes more sense with the stories being in this order.

Β

As an aside, the Indian government thought the β€œThuggee Cult” stuff in Doom was so offensive, they refused to let them film in India. So, they moved production to Sri Lanka, and all the β€œIndian” characters are speaking Sinhalese, a language not found in India.

Ok, so I had to make an accoount for this movie. There was just so much, but I have to bring up a certain trend about The Rock's character. So he seems to be some kind of law enforcement officer. He's introduced in 5, where we see him end things by shooting a drug dealer in the head and then letting Vin Deisel and Paul Walker go free even though he has them caught. Then, in 6, he has Shaw caught and allows him to walk out. In that scene, it seems as though he is allowing Shaw to leave so as to save Mia, however he and the rest of the fast group immediately chase after and proceed to kill Shaw as well as his entire team in that miles long airplane chase. Finally, in 7, we see The Rock encouraging Vin Deisel to go after Jason Statham and strongly suggesting that Vin kill Statham rather than capture him. The final scene has The Rock, as well as numerous nameless armed gaurds, escorting Statham to a prison cell. All along the way The Rock is telling Statham how he wishes Statham would escape so that The Rock could meet him in the feild and kill him.

Β

It seems to me as though a pattern has been set where The Rock doesn't actually want to capture criminals. Instead, he wants to be sent after criminals whom he can pretend to be attempting to bring to justice only to end up killing them in combat in order to sate his bloodlust. This suggests that, in fast 5, when he allowed Walker and Deisel to go free, it may have been less so a matter of feeling indebted to them for saving his life and more a desire to avoid the neat, bloodless resolution that bringing them in would be and instead allow them to go free so that The Rock might encounter them in a firefight/unreasonable-chase-sequence and kill them in the future.

Β

The Hypersport weighs around 1,400kg (3000lb). Lets not try to bother explaining how it might be remotely possible.

Β

I just love that it is done so nonchalantly that we the audience should be totally buying into it no questions asked.

Love this movie. I don't even want to post any snarky comments about it, because I just rewatched it and damn, that final scene where Paul Walker drives up to Vin Diesel is still so touching.

Β

So instead, I'll just ask a question: what does the nickname 'No-Knees' Denise even mean? I honestly feel like this is the screenwriter's single moment of intentional ambiguity - this is the central mystery of the film that's up to the viewer to decide for themselves.

Β

Also, if none of the central cast can lose a fight, does that mean that a fight between Ludacris and the Rock would result in a tie?

Β

Finally, if any of these characters needs a spinoff, it's Kurt Russell. Jared Leto already took the Mr. Nobody movie title, but Fast and Furious: Mr. Nobody would be acceptable.

Β

Β

Also the in the wooden bridge scene near the end there is a throwback to that classic "Raiders" scene when Indy goes for his gun... Only this time he does not have it...

Β

I remember watching a YouTube video where they analyzed this ( I, for the life of me, can't remember which video it was :S ) and they said that the fact that chronologically "Doom" happens before makes that bit /beat just a reference for the audience a not a genuine decision that the Indy character would of made, because now there is a difference, It was an genuine natural reaction in "Raiders" but in "Doom" it's an afterthought just to get a "reference chuckle".

Β

With all of this said, I.M.H.O. it is also possible that the change to make "Doom" a precuel could have been made at the last minute so that Indy didn't cheat on Marion ( Just like the Paul said in a previous FF episode ) amongst other aditional things

Yeah that joke didn't land for me...

Β

The first time I saw the movie I thought it was a blowjob joke for some reason, but then this last time I saw it as a Fat Joke... ( Denise is so fat that you can't see her Knees, maybe )

Personally I thought that he did that because that car has a rear-engine design... Oh well

I actually didn't have one yet, but that's definitely one I needed to make. Here ya go:

Β

Another correction from the episode: during the "Daddy's gotta go to work" scene, Adam said that The Rock told his daughter that "Miranda" was going to be there in a few minutes. He clearly says Elena (aka - Brazilian cop lady that they clearly didn't know what to do with but aren't ready to kill off yet).

Β

On another note: are the larger gifs like this one causing anyone problems? I like them, but I know they might also cause page loading problems, especially if anyone is reading on a mobile device. These are fun to make/post, but if they're annoying or anything, I can resize them.

There is actually a 5 second alternate mini scene with Tyrese telling jokes at the party that was in the version I saw in theaters down here in Venezuela

Β

The version of the 5 second mini scene that I think most of you saw was the one where Tyrese pokes fun at a girl and says:

Β

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Β

( Starts at 15 second mark and sorry for the quality but that is the only one tha I could find )

Β

P.P.S.: I'm so sorry for so many post but "I got a fever, and the only prescription is more Furious 7!" :D

Did anyone else see Kurt Russels character WINK at Vin Diesels during his death scene. What the fuck was that all about?

After that story, question time:

Did I miss it either in 6 or 7 or have the movies never officially addressed the disappearance of Santos and Leo from the crew/family after 5? I remember hearing they were left out because of contract disputes to be in 6, but they just sort of went away in terms of plot/importance...not that character continuity is a problem for this franchise or anything, but it sort of bugs me, especially with this whole "family" horseshit being the driving motivation for everyone now.

Β

I'm sure they'll return at some point. Maybe they ended up in prison and Fast 9 will be about getting them back.

For the Omissions segment...

Β

In the jumping through 3 buildings in a car scene, inside the 3rd building there is a makeshit museum or gallery of some sort with some statues that they crash and destroy before jumping out.

Β

0a96636ab274defc81bc37fea995bec217fa6468.gif

Β

Those statues remind me a lot of the statue army from the 3rd "The Mummy" film...

Β

Β

2705717682_d510cc00c6_b.jpg

Β

Another "fun" fact is that the director from the first Fasts Rob Cohen is the director of The Mummy 3 and Universal owns both the Fasts and Mummy franchises... Could this also be an F.U. to Rob Cohen? Or maybe a wink / reference / same universe / obscure fact / statues gathering dust and occupying space in the universal studio lot? He also directed "Stealth" so...

Β

*Ps.: Oh wait a second... After listening to the episode this must mean that Universal movies DO exist in the same universe so years after The mummy movies the events of the "Fasts" movies take place... NAILED IT!
