Tango & Cash or Over the Top

Recommended Posts

First off, you guys have yet to do a Stallone movie. Second, both of these movies are incredible.

  • Over The Top has a Kenny Loggins song written for it and the guy arm-wrestles for the love of his son.
  • Tango & Cash may have the first script whose dialog is composed entirely of zingers. There is not a scene in the movie where Tango & Cash do not trade some kind of smartass remark.

I second "Over the Top." He drives a semi-truck into a mansion, for pete's sake.

Also, "Cobra." A cult who plans to take over the world by killing random people. A fashion shoot with robot props. Sylvester Stallone cutting a slice of pizza in half with scissors.

As far as Stallone movies go, there are a few that would be on my list before Tango & Cash or Over The Top:

Rhinestone

Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot

Judge Dredd

Cobra

Staying Alive

I agree with Cobra, it's the quintessential "loose cannon" cop movie.

Corba was really poor on too many levels and Stallone freely acknowledges it but Tango & Cash was made to be hyperactively ridiculous..

I mean the opening scene where criminals put the brakes on their tanker rather than drive into or around Stallone who goes onto call Rambo a pussy and shoot said tanker and lap up a handful of drugs.

Then you have Kurt being shot at by an Asian who appears through his mirror and returns fire with what appears to be a gun/boot. Leading to a foot chase with boobies and Kurt produces a gun with a vast laser sight bigger than the gun itself.

All in the first 10 minutes!

Then there's the self-deprecating gay jokes, soap dropped in the shower routine, possibly the most American British bad guy ever who speaks only in colloquialisms, tooled up SUV's, Q's bond lab rip-off and the least naked exotic dancer ever... oh and Kurt in drag.

I've already started a thread for it, but how is "Nighthawks" not on that list... Stallone in a dress, not once but twice, plus the Hobo with a Shotgun himself as the villain. Maybe there should just be a general Stallone episode...

Both of these are two of my favorite Stallone films, the one liners and zingers for tango and cash are some of the best in the 80's while over the top he arm wrestles the whole movie! Also he has a son who I first thought was a girl for most the film

If you're talking Stallone, in addition to the movies already listed, there is also Rocky V, Stop or My Mom Will Shoot, and The Specialist to consider as well.

I second this one for sure.

I always say that this movie was born out of a bet; the bet that the head writer couldn't write a movie script entirely of zingers.

What I love about Stallone's movies in the late 80s was that they all had the soundtrack made up of Gloria Estefan backing tracks. There are guys being murdered and its upbeat pop music playing.

Fuckin' on the money, you're too right.

Over The Top is an amazing experience. A deadbeat trucker is gonna arm wrestle his way into his kid's heart? Robert Loggia is a villian for some dumb reason. One of Stallone's opponents drinks gasoline before bouts. There's a great Rifftrax for this, if you're into the MST3k thing.

It's not gasoline, it's motor oil, and apparently he did it for real.

I know WAY too much about Over The Top. It's a movie that, as children, my brother and I knew was ridiculous and could enjoy it for its absurdity.

Well in Tango & Cash it was Jack Palance who instead of just killing the main characters and getting on with his criminal empire, plays games with them just because, ultimately leading to his death.
