A Serbian Film (2010)

Recommended Posts

A highly controversial movie from Serbia, screened at many festivals and eventually banned in quite a few countries. The original, uncut/uncensored version of the film can be found on DVD or can be found (illegally, obviously) on YouTube.

Definitely an extremely disturbing movie to say the least, but if the "HDTGM?" gang can handle certain aspects of something like "Sleepaway Camp," I think they'll be able to ultimately get through something like "A Serbian Film."

I think recommending a movie like this to people is actually prohibited under the Geneva convention.

I recall opening a YouTube video of the music from this movie and being compelled to turn it off in under a second. Everything about the movie seems like it wants to hurt you.

All the more reason to want to hear Jason freak the frick out about it! ;)

No way this gets done on the show unless they are just not going to have June on the episode, since she has gone on to say that violence/gore really upsets her.

Perhaps it's an episode then for just Paul, Jason and a guest.

Episodes where one of the gang is missing always feel weird to me. Not crazy about that idea.

That being said, June sat through Punisher War Zone so she can handle a fair amount of violence. I couldn't even make it passed the guy grinding in the glass and I think that's the first 20 minutes.

The thing about this movie is that it doesn't seem like a so-bad-it's-good movie and that sitting through it is a grueling exercise in endurance. It doesn't sound like it's particularly ridiculous, just unpleasant. Simply being a bad movie isn't enough, it needs a certain something, and not simply a movie that wallows in unpleasantness. And whether you love it or hate it, I get the feeling that the creators accomplished what they set out to do: create an endurance test. I certainly recommend Dancer in the Dark or Funny Games because they are difficult to watch or are audacious.

Although not as graphic, something like either version of "Funny Games" to me is very similar to "A Serbian Film."

Sorry, I meant to say I certainly WOULDN'T. Typo. Man, people who didn't figure that out must have thought I was nuts. And yeah, all are very hard to watch,

Yes let's do this as a double feature with Salo! Seriously? This was just gross and I fell sick after watching it. I can't imagine any hilarious riffs on SPOILER ALERT a dude raping his 6 year old son. Maybe a bit of Manzoukas playing a creep for laughs but I think this is too depraved even for that character.

I have taken several runs at this one, but can't finish it. I've never laughed so hard at a scene for being so bonkers, while also being utterly disgusted with what was happening, as one of the "innovations" of the bad guy (the worst of them).

FUCK THAT GARBAGE. It has no redeeming value, it's not bad in a funny or subversive or crazy way, it's just utter shit that doesn't deserve any more attention than it's already gotten.

And also, "A Serbian Film" makes "Sleepaway Camp" look like "Citizen Kane," so GTFO with that worthless comparison.

And I know I'm taking this matter far too seriously, but as a huge fan of horror, I've been so upset by the ascendence of torture porn and the subsequent dearth of actual creepy movies. I don't know why rapey and gross seem to have become the standard in modern horror, but tripe like "Human Centipede" and "A Serbian Film" are exhibit A in this upsetting trend. I'm totally okay with graphic violence (the original "Dawn of the Dead" is one of my favorite films of all time), but it needs to be part of an interesting and scary narrative. Not just a laundry list of excess and discomfort for its own sake. It reminds me of when Paul compares "In The Name of The King" to a movie adaptation of "Drunk History," in that these dumdums are rambling on with meaningless and outrageous plot elements.

It is terrible. This isn't the worst film ever made from a technical or even plot coherency standpoint, but it's probably the most seedy and awful piece of garbage. I too like horror, so I've tried several times, but after I laugh at that horribly ridiculous scene, that's when I turn it off.
