Massive spoiler alert for people who have not seen this yet. And it doesn't even begin to touch the litany of issues I had with the plot.

 

I actually thought that, if you ignore the plot entirely, the movie was kind of enjoyable. Its like watching Bad Boys 2 in space. The integrity of its sci fi was about at Bad Boys 2 level, too. All I gotta say is, when an old sarcastic Futurama gag takes your sci fi to school for a lesson, you know you went wrong somewhere.

This is ridiculous. I mean, I think we can all agree that the sci-fi in "Bad Boys 2" was pretty solid, which is ironic considering that the first one was so full of holes despite being a direct adaptation of the story by Ray Bradbury. I could be wrong. I'm probably wrong...

Even though it's unnecessary I'll go ahead and pile on, this is about as pointless a post as you can make on this forum. If you're going to recommend this movie you may as well recommend every big budget sci-fi and action movie. If you can't look past any "plot holes" there may be than I would hate to see any sci-fi or action movie, which these Star Trek movies are much more than sci-fi, with you in the theater.

 

There have also been multiple examples of the Enterprise entering planets atmospheres throughout the history of the Star Trek series' so it's not like this is unheard of in the Star Trek universe.

 

There's a really good review on Redlettermedia.com of the first Abrams Star Trek that makes the point that while it's more fantasy than sci-fi than what Star Trek was originally meant to be, it has to be to appeal to the masses. There is plenty for Star Trek nerds to nitpick in the two Abrams movies but the fact is they're fun, well made action movies and if you can't enjoy them for what they are than I feel bad for you.

It's so easy to explain away the ocean thing with existing Star Trek gadgetry (the ship has shields, something called a structural integrity field, etc.). I think people just enjoy piling on JJ Abrams because he's a big deal right now. Trek films have been full of silly plot points/holes since they started and the new films are no different.

 

Honestly, as much as I enjoy io9, they tend to go on near-vendettas against things they don't like. And Rob is far from their best writer.

This needs to be emphasized. If it is high on Rotten Tomatoes, it MUST BE BALLS-OUT CRAZY. Not riddled with plot holes. Not pretentiously boring. Balls out crazy. Fast Five. Devil's Advocate. I think even if you hold the greatest sci-fi movies of all time up to scientific scrutiny there's bound to be a bunch of nonsensical stuff going on, because the "fi" part of "sci-fi" means fiction, so it's just a bunch of made up impossible shit.

 

There's no way the Back to the Future movies make any sense scientifically, but that's because the stuff they're doing isn't possible, and being written by a bunch of non-scientists. But you just suspend your disbelief and enjoy yourself.

If you go through the backlog of episodes, when was the last time there was a fairly new release that you could plausibly see a bunch of your trusted friends defend as a genuinely good (not just fun a la the Fast and Furious movies, but good) movie? Even The Odd Life of Timothy Green, which was met more with a critical "meh" than a "wha?", was too close to the realm of a good movie to get a straight episode out of.

Also, if you can explain the craziness in writing in a single short paragraph, it might not be a good pick. I've seen that on here a bunch, like someone's said "You should review this because this and this and this happens", they give away anything that would be interesting, and then there's LITERALLY nothing left to talk about. Many of the films they talk about on the show HAVE to be experienced and can't just be explained away.

So, I'm recommending Star Trek Into Darkness, which isn't necessarily a 'bad' movie, but certainly one that is easy to laugh at. The NUMEROUS instances of bedroom eyes between Spock and Kurt made me uncomfortable, and I've seen lots and lots of gay porn, and even made some. The plot, also, equally as nonsensical as gay porn. Oh, I could go on, this movie was just ridiculous. And, on a different note offensively, the last 10 minutes was the total annihilation of San Francisco, in the middle of the workday. It was beyond disturbing because, NO ONE bats a fucking eye. Which is even more disturbing because it was the Enterprise that really contributed to the ship going down and destroying SF in the first place. And then they have a memorial ceremony, not for the millions of people who died in San Francisco, but for those crew members who died in space. This movie was so frantic it was like someone gave three months supply of 80 mg extended release Adderall to a 90 lb, C- film school students, locked them in a room for a month, and said "go at it." In fact I'm pretty sure that's what happened. ***Spoiler Alert*****

Yeah, I don't think you watched the movie too carefully. The villain deliberately pilots the ship into SF (there's a scene of him telling the computer to plot the course), the Enterprise crew have nothing to do with it.

Really? I don't remember any. I'm not the biggest TNG fan, but none that I can think of in TOS.

No, you can make a good sci-fi movie that appeals to a lot of people without it being stupid. (e.g. Aliens, The Fifth Element, Star Wars, etc.)
