Since Unspooled is the only regularly active forum outside of CBB, I wanted to let you know that the Earwolf forums are not long for this world. I explained in detail over here but the short version is that failing software and the time required to keep it sputtering along are no longer tenable.

I know many of you are already members of the Facebook group, and there might be a section for Unspooled on Paul's (or the official HDTGM) Discord server as an alternative. Regardless, thanks for sticking around and sharing your movie opinions!

Thanks for being amazing, @DanEngler! I hate to see the forums leave.

I have been spending my bad movie time watching the You Tube series Caravan of Garbage. And I believe @Cam Bertis quoted in their episode on the David Hasselhoff Nick Fury movie. I watched that movie on purpose when it aired but I don’t remember any of it apparently.

Oddly enough, My wife and I just discussed it a few weeks ago 😀

  3. Good afternoon!

Coming soon the HDTGM Message boards will be migrating to Discord! There are a few reasons for this, but most important reason is that the Earwolf Forums have become difficult for new listeners to come and participate. @JammerLea@AlmostAGhostand I have been working on making this transition as seamless as possible, providing a space that is inclusive where the HDTGM community can grow.

As of now, the Discord Room, with Paul, Molly, and Cody's blessing, is officially open! Of course, there are sure to be a few growing pains, but ultimately, this will be an exciting step forward. :)

    Important Information:

C&O's for A Gnome Named Gnorm have already been culled for the mini episode dropping 1/22

C&O's for the next movie will be pulled from both the Earwolf Message Boards AND The HDTGM Discord to be read on the mini episode dropping 2/5.

After 2/5, ALL C&O's will come from the HDTGM Discord.

I have great affection, and it's sad to see them go; however, after working on Discord, I do think it will be an fantastic change of venue.

I hope to see you all there :)

Never heard of this! Sounds really cool!

The still of Gnorm in the tubi preview was enough to really turn me off the movie. It grossed me out. I appreciate how well made and acted Gnorm was by the puppeteers but Gnorm was was too much. Very Mac and Me kind of nauseated. I agree with everything they said with the actors; they really were great.

Honestly, I was super checked out. I couldn't tell you if anyone's performance was good or not. And every time I tried to refocus, there was gross-o Gnorm with his gross-me-out lips staring at me, screeching about his fucking lumen while "Low Rider" blared in the background.

The only good thing was I watched this on Tubi so the commercials gave me an occasional reprieve.

I just didn't find this at all watchable.

ETA: According to my Letterboxd, the movies have been all around terrible for me this week. It's been Forbidden Zone (gross), The Turning (boring), this (gross and boring), and Gretel and Hansel (boring). Fortunately, I had Cobra Kai...

  6. Paul, June, and Jason discuss the 1990 fantasy buddy comedy A Gnome Named Gnorm. They talk about Anthony Michael Hall’s odd detective character, Gnorm the gnome being at the wrong place at the wrong time, Jerry Orbach roughing up Gnorm, and much more. Plus, everyone dives into an important conversation about laserdiscs.

The talk about lack of support reminds me when I couldn't log back into my account for about two months as I had my password/username logged in and it got cleared when I updated my browser. Tried contacting support and got zilch for it, and was only able to get back on by process of elimination of my login combos. It's also kind of telling when this is really one of the only forums still going on the page as other shows have fallen off the map or haven't even been given one, like How Did This Get Played when I checked a few months back, though that could have changed.

Some do, but most don’t. This may be a case of correlation not equaling causation, but, iirc, I think the CBB forum had to get locked down over some trolls a couple years back. They eventually re-opened, but with nowhere near the same amount of traffic — which affected some of the other shows. My guess is they were just done with that bullshit and pretty much determined that the forums were more trouble than they were worth — especially when they can be outsourced elsewhere for free.

One of the reasons I like the forums is because you have access to multiple shows. When they were around, I would post on IWTT, Nerd Poker, and CBB. Now if I want to discuss Unspooled I have to either have a Geneva or FB account, Discord (eventually) for HDTGM, etc. It was nice to have all your shows centralized.

  8. I kind of hate it when people ask how something got made, and the answer is drugs. It always feels sort of lazy to me. However, watching this, I don't think it was made because of drugs, but I think it is meant to be watched while high. There's not really much of a plot, so my mind would wander from time to time, and then, suddenly, there would be, like, a chicken talking. This wouldn't be explained. It would just kind of happen. I think the kind of X-Rated Sesame Street, ADHD-ness of it is meant to be taken in all at once. It's made for you to just catch certain things on different viewings. Not that I would want to re-watch it, but for, like, the kind of people who would want to.

I had trouble finding this to watch it and now reading your reaction, I’m glad I had those troubles. I MAY still watch it if I can find it for free, but I won’t pay for it.

That's fair. If you can watch it for free, it's worth looking at, but bail when it gets too much. Like, again, I don't mind so much if things want to push boundaries, but I like there to be some kind of point behind it. If it's just sort of shock value for shock value's sake, which doesn't really work for me. Literally, it starts with some minstrel show nonsense, and ends with a group number with a whole bunch of nonsense in there with, seemingly, no purpose. Like mermaids and Jesus with a crucifix, but it doesn't really add up to anything other than, "Are you offended yet?"

  10. But seriously, I had a massive migraine yesterday and couldn't start watching this until last night. I just finished it. Honestly, I'm not too sure what to think of it. Let's see if I can work it out.

My prevailing feeling is one of nausea. Like, the whole thing is gross. Not just with the sexism and racism, but just everything about it turned my stomach. However, I think this was absolutely the type of visceral reaction they were hoping for, so, like Mission Accomplished?

It felt very student art filmy. Very punk rocky. very John Waters-y. But, without the deftness of any of those things, and kind of fails at everything it is trying to do. Like, if I look at it at a Comedy, I don't think it's very funny. If I look at it as a Musical, *most* of the numbers are intentionally terrible. It also misses me as an Art Film as it seems to lack a point beyond lets be as offensive as we can be. I mean, there's a word for people like that, and it's "asshole." So...the movie is kind of a big asshole.

Again, I feel like that was very much the intention of the film, so I guess it succeeds. In a weird way, I'm glad I saw it. It's definitely not something I would have ever picked for myself, I hadn't even heard of it before, and that's what I like about Musical Mondays. It forces me to go outside of my comfort zone. That being said, I would neve want to watch this ever again. It is pretty fucking distasteful -- lol.
