Episode 84 — No Holds Barred: LIVE!

Recommended Posts

I figured my first comment in this forum would be fitting for the first movie I actually paused the podcast to watch.

A few details I absolutely loved:

  • The staff at the french restaurant refer to Rip as "Monsieur Le Rip"
  • The fact that it took me three solid runs through the shot of the Asian guy at the hillbilly bar falling over to understand the physics of what caused his injury
  • The bathroom graffiti was endlessly delightful - "WASH YOUR HANDS... IT'S THE LAW" "NO HIPPIES, PUNKS", "PENCIL NECK GEEK", "ZOMBIES LIVE!"
  • Something about the network's Manchurian Candidate prank makes Rip think that Zeus is literally standing in front of him and crashes into the mirror. Was that... a hologram? Did they use the birthday boy's video camera to generate it?
  • Sam's endgame for escaping her kidnappers during the final match is... to run downstairs and watch the match in person? Leave the fucking building!

This was a genuine delight. Absolutely worth the wait between the last episode and this. The quantity of the shows is understandably decreasing, but the quality is only getting exponentially better.

Wow. What a great movie. You did cover a lot, but here are some of my thoughts:

- I'm a bit confused by Randy's injuries. Besides the fact that we don't see him get beaten up that much to cause him to be in traction… at the end of the match we see Rip lifts Randy up on to his shoulder. If Randy can barely move his pinky, leave him be Rip!!

- At the end, when Samantha is getting away, one of the stooges yells out to the security office… "I told you stop her… Shoot her. Shoot her." So now we are totally open to murdering someone?!

- The end credits say "In order of appearance". No. No they are not.

- When Zeus is being interviewed on the couch, when he stands up to challenge Rip… neither of his eyes are looking into camera.

I'm probably not the first person to point this out, but the WWE (formerly the WWF) is in Stamford, not Fairfield. Also, neither are particularly rural. Stamford is actually a fairly major city in Connecticut. Stamford is in Fairfield County, so it's an honest mistake, but one that was immediately obvious to me and your dozen of other Connecticut listeners.

I watched this after seeing that Lennon was the guest and totally saw him in a few roles also! The dookie-feur was Paul though, right down to the toupee and glasses... Huebel would be great as one of the underlings and of course June would be great as Samantha.

As always, love all the added facts and details from you guys! ♥♡♥♡\(◎o◎)/!★☆★☆

And we are going to get another Hulkster movie on top of it?? It's not xmas but...Santa with Muscles?

What was with the weird edit at the end of the podcast? A woman was asking a question of June, then there is a skip (the crowd is suddenly laughing) and they are talking about the helicopter. What got edited out?

Great episode by the way.

I want to note that June mentioned Sam's book of choice when Randy is in the hospital. I can confirm it reads "Men You Can Love". I noticed that before she said anything. She is right on the money.

Also that has to be the slowest elevator in the world in the TV headquarters. She escapes and manages to have the doors close before the goons and guards reach her. She rides down several floors and the doors open and they are waiting for her and they are not even winded!

The "In order of appearance" credits were one last bark of a laugh after I'd let my guard down and assumed the madness was over. Do you think maybe that's how the credits were supposed to go but the Hulkster got in there after and was like "they'll be confused if I don't put my favourite people first brother"

Also noticed something they missed or did not mention. During the "Teeny Weenie" Scene when the huge guy (Neanderthal I believe) walks out of the bathroom, he has a long tail of TP sticking out the back of his pants.

Also, I've accepted crosstalk as a reality of this podcast, but I think it deserves at least some attention that when they first start discussing Sam's doublecross, Tom makes a Mata Hari joke

Here's a weird connection between Porn and Hulk Hogan that doesn't feature his sex tape.

The iconic nWo theme, was actually taken from a porn movie.

Great episode by the way.

The person asking the questions went on to chastise the men for always interrupting June. I can see why it was cut out, but it actually led to one of the funnier moments of the podcast, when Jason (jokingly) stepped in to answer the question for June.

Errors and ommisions:

Hulk Hogan's name did not belong to the WWF, it belonged to Marvel Comics.

Probably why they could use the other wrestlers' names, but not Hogan's.

How come did no one mention that the little person in the cage in the bar scene is Peter Dinklage in an early unaccredited role...

It is not Peter Dinklage, unless I missed something. I thought it might be but I looked all over the place and didn't see anything. In fact Dinklage didn't have any roles until 1995, 6 years later. Also doesn't seem like a role he would take, he has said he wouldn't take a role just to be a little person. I could be wrong but I am 99% sure that isn't him.

Everyone could add a Hulk Hogan "brother" to the end of every sentence I heard for the rest of my life, and I would be fine with that. It's the gift that keeps on giving.

Ah. Well...they kind of do.

Three things:

1. Paul and the gang were right- Why did they even need Rip to be on the network when they were already number 1. If they were struggling so much- how could they afford to give Zeus $100 000 two weeks in a row. Also, June's confusion about the last fight being a "battle of the tough guys" is because the first fight took place in a bar. The second fight took place in a steel mill. And then,... it takes place in a ring? With a ref? And the same location as Rip's network?

2. Can't believe you guys failed to mention the awesome theme song that closed out the movie.

-- it's right up there with WInner Takes it All, and Meet Me Halfway.

3. I think Zeus' eye/eye brow come from a burn injury in a back story. Possibly from a lightning bolt? (ZEUS!)

It wasn't in the same place as Rip's Network. It was Kurt Fuller's network. It was just on of the studio's in the building.

Also they failed to notice that Fuller's blackmail of holding Sam hostage basically depended on her being the last one off the elevator so they can just grab her. You got Randy and his buddy get off then she starts to follow. The two guards basically grab her as she starts to exit and quickly get the elevator to go to the holding office. What if she went first? Do they kidnap all three? Abort the plan?

I'm not sure about the eyebrow but the actor is actually blind in his right eye.

- Lugwrench was played by Jeep Swenson, who was a wrestler and played Bane in the equally crappy Batman and Robin. Also of note, both Tiny Lister and Jeep Swenson returned to wrestling in 1996 as part of a team at WCW Uncensored '96. Because this was not a WWF even, Zeus was renamed "Z-Gangsta" and Swenson was The Ultimate Solution, renamed from the Final Solution after someone figured out it probably wasn't a good idea to name someone after the program Hitler planned to kill off the Jews with.

Which led to one of the most nonsensical gimmick matches ever and something that had to be an absolute fucking bore to watch live in person...
