Episode 66 — Get Up On This

Recommended Posts

Jensen Karp is one of the most advanced chartists we've ever had on the podcast. As a rapper, designer, writer, and taste maker, his musical knowledge runs deep and we're thrilled to learn from him. He waxes poetic on the Best Hip-Hop Dis Songs, gets poppy with the Top Pop Star Film Debuts, and makes it personal with Hermes the Chart Goose. This is probably the only podcast where you can learn about brain tumors AND Sisqo's porn collection, so get up on this!

The host of one of my favorite podcasts guesting on one of my other favorite podcasts?! This is a pre-Summah miracle.

You could tell Howard really had a great time on this one. Really interesting look back at some things about hip-hop I didn't know. Going to be looking up Jensen's podcast for sure.

Aw yeah! I've been a fan of Jensen since the Hype Men podcast (R.I.P.) and he does have one of the best Twitter accounts around. Plus his industry insider stories are such a treat, which make for such an entertaining episode. Hopefully Howard will show up on Get Up On This soon to continue the great Drake debate.

Not really from this episode, but just watched

It is really weird to watch Howard do the Lee impression. The Lee voice existed as its own entity in my mind, so it is odd as hell to see it coming out of Howard's face.

This was like being 15 and walking into a graduate level course. I know about a 4 year stretch of hip hop and then 30 minutes of deep hip hop talk - I was lost.

This episode was so good it brought Summah to Buffalo. It's 60 and sunny out of nowhere today. Thanks guys!

Shout out to Newsies!

Santa Fe was the place Christian Bale kept singing about.

It's hard to forget it with that distinct Christian Bale-ian brooklyn accent he sang in.

Great episode.

Jensen Karp was a deeee-light to listen to.

Awesome ep, but any conversation about of early, seminal white rappers that does not draw heavily on MC 900 Foot Jesus is a conversation wasted.

Here in Winnipeg, despite not having anything to do with Swollen Members I must say I'm also embarrassed.

Howard -- My friends and I love the Gravediggaz record! I remember listening to that in highschool.

Also I agree w/ Hot Karl's choice for the canibus track as best diss track.. i can recite the whole thing from memory

PS Drake sux

Oh man. This episode was like it was in a foreign language.. but I was glued. Just about everything anyone said was a new concept to me until they got to "Degrassi Junior High" and then I was gone again.

I'm really going to listen to this again and open up YouTube like primeroach suggested and treat this like a lecture. I want to get an A in Hip Hop History class.

Early shows being Rhianna multiple times, whatever the hell dub step is, a symposium on hip hop. Let's get a punk or metal show

As a massive hip hop fan I loved this episode!

I was disappointed to hear "The Takeover" as the number one diss song. I would have gone with Karp's choice "2nd Round Knockout" by Canibus or "The Bitch in Yoo" by Common which is a filthy diss on Ice Cube and my all time favorite.

I was glued to this episode because I love nothing more than hearing a fellow hip hop nerd drop knowledge and feel bad for not identifying a rap song.

As my 0 posts would indicate, I've never felt compelled to post on here. However, Jensen was an amazing guest. I hadn't heard of him previously, but his stories were ridiculous. I enjoy all of the Who Charted episodes and this one went over the top for me. Excellent work all around.

And yes, "The Takeover" is a great track. I was hoping it would be #1.
