FisterRoboto 7499 Posted January 21, 2016 Something I was thinking about this week, since the Slash film article was kind of late, was that I'd prefer it came out with the minisode rather than the regular episode. That way we don't have to read it to comment on the actual episode, it's sort of like an extended corrections and omissions. That's a pretty good idea for a compromise on some of the points that have been brought up in this thread. I think they'd go down easier as a followup than as part of the discussion itself. Â I have to agree with you. I'm not saying don't do Cannon Films (which I just realized I've been misspelling), after all one of the movies I've been championing is Rockula--which I just found out was Cannon. I'm just saying maybe limit them to maybe one or two a year. With The Apple coming up, that will be three! Cannon films since October. Not to mention stuff like Death Spa, which might as well be Cannon. Yeah, that's probably more accurate. I think they're fun movies - just not so often. And unless I'm miscounting, that's three out of ten movies starting with MotU. I don't even think they had that rate with Nic Cage movies when they were all pumped about him early on. 2 Share this post Link to post

As a regular forum poster, I really like this idea and would be 100% for it; however, I don't think it takes into account the greater audience who don't come here to post their thoughts. I think the idea for the articles is, "You just enjoyed the episode, now go and read the rest of the story..." If the article doesn't come out until the mini-episode, interest will have waned and may distract from the upcoming episode.  So, for me personally, your idea is perfect; for everyone else, I'm not so sure.... 2 Share this post Link to post
DrOJSimpsonMD 26 Posted January 21, 2016 I haven't looked at any of the Oral Histories, but I don't have a problem with their existence. Paul promotes them and sometimes grabs something from them, but it's not like there are inside jokes from them that makes reading them mandatory. To me, it's like when a band takes an opening band with them on tour. Don't be one of those dicks that boos them because they're not the band you came to see. The band you came to see most likely brought them because they liked their music. Â Watched Streets of Fire. Was not one I enjoyed. I thought it was going to be nuts, but it was just a really boring version of Escape from New York...and I'm a huge Rick Moranis fan. Not to get too personal, but Rick Moranis reminds me a lot of my dad, and that has always made me like him. Come back to showbiz Rick! Share this post Link to post
Cameron H. 23786 Posted January 21, 2016 Don't be one of those dicks that boos them because they're not the band you came to see. The band you came to see most likely brought them because they liked their music. Â Despite how it may appear, I don't think anyone here is "booing" anyone. I know this may seem like normal Internet boohooing, but it's really just something to talk about. We could just as easily be talking about feminism in Marvel movies or be engaged in a Tom Selleck gif battle. We all know we can just not read them. We're just bullshitting. Â No one is saying Harris' articles are crap and obviously Paul thinks highly of them. To further your band analogy, it's like in the sixties when Jimi Hendrix opened for the Monkees. They're both good in their own way, they just don't seem to fit together--for me. Or, as Fister said, "they feel like they fall outside of the discussion." Or, as Plan B and I were saying, if there's a clear reason or hook to them, that's great, but otherwise, they feel sort of pointless. Â Here's another analogy: I ask the person I'm with, "Why did the chicken cross the road?" I say the punchline. We. Laugh. Uproariously. Once our chuckles have subsided, the person I'm with says, "You know that chicken you were talking about? It was exhibiting extremely abnormal behavior for a normal farmyard fowl, let me tell you why...Also, the reason he crossed the road where he did was because there was a hole in the fence just north of there, so he actually had to move south a bit to get passed the construction that would have been obstructing his crossing. Furthermore, the chicken probably crossed the road because it's brain is the size of pea, and it's just a stupid chicken. Next week, why don't you tell a joke about 'Three men walking into a bar?' I've been doing some fascinating research on the history of microbreweries that I'd love to share with you." Â Also, Â 4 Share this post Link to post

I digress but have you ever thought about how the "Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side!" joke is possibly a statement on death rather than one about how jokes just sometimes aren't funny?  1 Share this post Link to post

The band you came to see most likely brought them because they liked their music. Don't be one of those guys that comes in halfway through the conversation and completely misstates what everyone has been saying. I don't think anyone has said they shouldn't exist. It's more been about how they guide the conversation. Â They haven't gotten to the point of dictating the movie, but that's a valid concern. Using your analogy, this would be like the opening band choosing the set list for the headliner. There's also concern about Blake's oral histories guiding the conversation rather than supplementing it, which would be like the headlining band playing the opener's songs. Â I think those are fair concerns and things we can discuss. But just because we're not a fan of things, I don't think anyone here (at least none of the regulars) would be like, "IT CAN'T EXIST BECAUSE I DON'T LIKE IT!" Â I digress but have you ever thought about how the "Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side!" joke is possibly a statement on death rather than one about how jokes just sometimes aren't funny? I was, like, 30 before I realized that "the other side" was a play on words that meant either/both the other side of the road and/or death. And I think the wordplay is supposed to be the joke. It's just one of those jokes I'd heard repeated over and over in a bunch of stupid variations that I never really thought about what the original joke actually meant. Â 2 Share this post Link to post

Cameron H. 23786 Posted January 21, 2016 I just wanted to add this... Â This is why I could never make it as a model. I'd feel like such a tool. 1 Share this post Link to post

That's the Tom Selleck playgirl photo I think, from looking at google images for that other masterpiece.  That reminds of a very uninteresting pointless story that i am now going to share with you. when I was a young man i was over at my friends house one time to see, I think it was the TV show "V" and what was on the wall of this home, a photo of Tom Selleck just like that one. and I'll never forget seeing that photo, and that uneasy feeling I got from seeing that photo just hanging from a wall on the home. because up to that point in my life most of the people I had run into had been very normal white caller folk and yet good old tom's mother had felt the need to hang this stupied picture on the wall. what was she thinking when she hung that on the wall for everyone to see. it wasn't porn but it wasn't art. Tom, my childhood friend was a bit white trash I think. 1 Share this post Link to post

jarrycanada 2483 Posted January 21, 2016 I am so happy my copy of "the Apple" showed up and in good shape, and i should point it out in a very un-played condition. very much like new. LOL I don't know why that would be. Share this post Link to post
Cameron H. 23786 Posted January 21, 2016 I know he's no Tom Selleck, but I sincerely hope that our viewings of Streets of Fire will finally elevate Rick Moranis to the sex symbol status he so richly deserves and has long been denied. Â (Not kidding. Watch My Blue Heaven.) Â Â I think i've seen this movie but i can't remember. I do recall seeing steve martin with that lyle lovett hairstyle before. Â so wish I could do this at my local Safeway store and they have it coming. Â http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86hwvNWwSL4 Â but rather then replacing the prices with lesser prices, I would add fake labels to the products such as. The scene where Joan Cusack is asking him about the stolen books in his trunk is one of the dumbest things ever, but it cracks me up every time. Â Oh, it's pretty much the best. It's so damn quotable. Although, that may just be because I grew up with it. I'm not sure if it would hold up for someone watching it for the first time as an adult... Â NEW GAME!!! Â Name a movie that you loved as a kid, that still (unironically) holds up for you, but you're pretty sure if you showed it to another adult, they just wouldn't "get it." Â BONUS GAME!!! Â In honor of the Rick Moranis, The Sexiest Man Alive: Â Â Name some celebrities that you think don't get enough credit for being sexy. And, without getting too mean, graphic, and/or shallow, feel free to name some celebrities that seem to universally be considered "sexy," but in your opinion, just aren't. Â I'll post mine later, I've got some thinking to do... 3 Share this post Link to post
jarrycanada 2483 Posted January 22, 2016 that game is called ! . and that movie for me Cameron H. is the 80's Tron. I loved that movie as a kid but after seeing it as an adult I would say it's ridiculous. special effects wise it doesn't hold up to much anymore. the fact that the film is just shot in black and white with effects shots that anyone could of done with a 90s home computer . Jeff Bridges is the dude and maybe the only thing holding the glue together in this film. I still like the film but if you didn't see that film in the 1980s I would say you would be asking if I am out of my mind for liking it.   need I say anymore! case in point. 1 Share this post Link to post
jarrycanada 2483 Posted January 22, 2016 I would say that dream bloat of a man would be Eric Roberts, don't you just want him to come over and beat ya up and then make sweet sweet love to him. LOL hahahahahha and then watch him have a panic attack because he can't find his cocaine. Â 2 Share this post Link to post
Cameron H. 23786 Posted January 22, 2016 Well, since 've already put forward Rick Moranis as my dude, I might as well complete the set with Joan Cusack. Â Â I wish there were a million more actresses just like her. Â As for movie, I'm going to have to say Hook. I know it can't be good, but I have a real soft spot for it. My runner up would probably be Just One of the Guys. 1 Share this post Link to post
DrOJSimpsonMD 26 Posted January 22, 2016 To the people calling me out for misunderstanding, you're right. I re-read and I misunderstood the crux of your posts...and for that... Â Â Â I loved Hook and watched it recently and felt it held up quite nicely. Was surprised to find out that it wasn't well liked by a lot of people. 6.7 on IMDb seems way too low. Jumanji has a higher rating...that's just wrong. My choice would be Mars Attacks! Â I have a hard time thinking of people that others don't find attractive. This is pretty recent, but I found Anne De Salvo to be quite attractive in Perfect. I don't know if that applies to her in general though. I think I just really liked the way they made her up in that one. Â ...and someone most people find attractive and does nothing for me, Angelina Jolie. Have never liked her face. 2 Share this post Link to post

DougGlassman 16 Posted January 22, 2016 Streets of Fire could actually be good with the right remake. The art design is over the top but workable and there's some good music, along with what might be the greatest opening number ever. Seriously, "Nowhere Fast" is the most earwormy song on an HDTGM movie since "This Is The End" from Staying Alive. 2 Share this post Link to post
FisterRoboto 7499 Posted January 22, 2016 Annie. Potts. Â Â Like many kids of the 80s, Ghostbusters was a very formative movie for me. I know we were supposed to love Dana Barrett, but Janine Melnitz was always the one that I preferred. 1 Share this post Link to post
