The Number 23 (2007)

Recommended Posts

I like that unlike other threads this long in the forum, there really isn't a post longer than a couple sentences as this movie just sucks the life out of you as it did Carrrey's characters in the film. I just want to hear the show try and break down the dumbass version of inception like story within a story going on in this movie, because you have Carrey the dogcatcher, Carrey the storybook police officer/killer, and then Carrey the actual killer/crazy person. That alone would make this episode amazing, especially after the infamous confusion over the parents in Sleepaway Camp.

Please do The Number 23. Jim Carey supposedly fired his manager and agent at the premiere.

One of the most ludicrous, contrived plots in movie history, soulful, tribal-tattoed and beater-wearing Jim Carey, some nonsense about the number 23, and lots of lines like, "We’re not crazy. We circled every 23rd word on every 23rd page, and it told us to come down here!"

From what I remember this movie sets it up so that there's something more mystical about the number 23 than other numbers and it acts like your mind is going to be BLOWN when they get around to telling you why it's so mystical and then is like "yeah, I got nothin..." So anticlimactic.

Let's not forget Joel Schumacher's other foray into David Fincher-esque deviant/mystery territory, 8mm. At least that turd had the good graces to star Nicholas Cage.

At least now we know the answer to "Would Nicholas Cage be better in The Number 23?"

I am not watching that because even the idea of it is upsetting.

To be fair, Sam Waterson was hotter back then.

And he went full tilt in the scene, which is pretty funny because he was really known only as the Law & Order district attorney to most people and to see him comically go full porn star was hilarious.

True story - I had a meeting with a literary manager who was trying to recruit me as a client not long before this movie came out. He was basically doing the Hollywood rep's version of negging me by trying to tell me that the missing piece in my script arsenal was a truly killer high-concept spec script - and THIS was the script he considered the perfect example. He even e-mailed it to me so I would have it for reference. I started reading it and stopped, thinking "this is dumb". Then I went to see the movie and thought, "No, wait, this is SUPER dumb."

Although every time Jim Carrey as his growly-voiced fantasy noir counterpart says the word "Fingerling", you can tell the tension between his desire for this to be a super-serious thriller and his subconscious awareness that this is SUPER dumb is tearing him apart.

An unbearable movie, I own it and have never been able to watch it all the way through. May God have mercy on your souls should you try to watch the whole thing.

This is the exact kind of movie the podcast should be focusing on

All I remember about this film is thinking 'why is his wife going along with this.' If your husband starts talking gibberish about the number 23, you don't humour him, you get medical help.

This movie is up there as among the ones I am most truly amazed that the podcast hasn't made it to, yet; because it was made by grownups who legitimately thought they were blowing the lid off this astonishing, world-defining secret that you could add and multiply numbers and thus make them into other numbers.

Please do this movie. I've listened to every single episode of this show I don't know how many times, and I feel like this would be a real cherry on top of the sundae you've already scooped and served.

There's a STAGGERING twist involving an author named "Topsy Kretts"... but I'll keep it top secret and not say another word.

Well shit, since Paul himself brought this movie up in the 2:22 episode, I have to ask WHY THE HELL HAVEN’T THEY DONE THIS YET???

it’s been a long time since I’ve seen this movie, but I remember it being every bit as insane as this preview suggests.

Prior to this post are 46 other posts, which is 23 twice. Also not including short films or bit parts/cameos when he was getting into acting, this is Carrey's 23rd major theatrical release.

When this film came out, I was 33, which is ten more numbers than 23. I turn 46 this month, which like you said, is 23 twice. It’s been 13 years since 2007 and look at our luck this year!

IT’S TIME TO WAKE UP, PEOPLE!!!!

If they don't get James Adomian for this episode then this is all for nothing!
