Episode 32 — 88 Minutes

A few years ago I cut together all the instances of Al touching women in "88 Minutes." It was touched (har) on briefly in the podcast, but there were SO many times that he did it. Dude straight up gropes Alicia Witt's breasts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySIwCDzKLdU

So I saw a different version of this movie....don't ask me how. But here are a few things that went down:

 

- the movie opened with shots of Kate Graham flying the kite and Al Pacino dancing to hip hop music in the bar. Yes, legendary Al Pacino gettin' down with the escort to hip hop music. An amazing piece of cinema.

- there was no opening murder scene or the scene where Al testifies with the ridiculous prosecutor. My thinking is that they had the one asian girl bring the cookies to Al and then decided to open the movie with the twin's murder so they had to hire someone who looked similar so they could play twins.

- The cab driver is rarely seen in the back seat of the cab. He just kind of disappeared and then is referenced later.

- In the end Al does admit to coaching the twin in order to get the guilty verdict. But as he asks Molly Ringwald "what would you do"....and then walks away.

 

I would have to watch the actual version to know what other differences there are, but I am not sure I want to subject my eyes to that.

Great stuff as always, Guys. But Pete holmes was too much. The long, loud laughter and the shrill yelling over everyone else really threw off the rhythm of the podcast

The little Pacino lines from Pete every now and again was really the sprinkles of Angel Dust in this wonderfully rolled joint of an ep.

 

But daaaaaaaaamn, this whole movie is just the old Bond villain stereotype of leaving mister Bond to die an awful slow death while the villain goes on with his day and Bond finds a clever way to escape. Except, instead of that being just one scene, it's the entire movie. I get the significance of the time he's given... but honestly, it's not convincing in its importance, if that makes any sense. There is no reason for Leelee Sobieski to draw it out like that when she has his total trust. All she needs to do is just invite herself over to his place one day and just murder him straight up. Push him down some stairs or something. Why even risk doing the whole Zodiac Killer/John Doe from Se7en game of fucking with him... especially when you're not good at it?

To be fair I were in his position I would instigate an acting method that required me to grope Leelee at every opportunity.. you know.. for the sake of drama.

This was a good episode. It should have been GREAT. But this Pete Holmes guy - whom I've never heard of and will actively avoid in the future - did his absolute best to ruin it. His incredibly grating, shrill voice and laughter cut through me like a knife. And he talks over everyone else, which is the worst part of it all. There was at least one instance where Paul's voice sounded completely exasperated with him.

 

If he ever does a director's cut of HDTGM?, I hope Paul pulls a George Lucas on this episode and cuts Holmes out completely.

Paul says that in addition to 88 Minutes, Gary Scott Thompson also wrote the movie K-9 (not true) and there's a joke that he must have also done the sequel named K-10. In actuality, Thompson does have writing credits for two sequels named K-911 and K-9: P.I.

Al Pacino goes to the Auditorium where his classes are held and tells his students that Jon Forster has been executed and we the audience see the execution via lethal injection, he continues to say that this is not a reason to celebrate and that the pain caused by the loss of a special someone is something that nobody completely overcomes but that you learn to live with as time goes by ( Maybe he was referring to the death of his sister ) then he continues his class by asking a question and then the movie ends, in this version the credits last 5 minutes (1 minute less than your version )

This is the tacked-on scene included on the DVD I watched listed as the "alternative ending".

This is on tonight and I'd forgotten how bonkers that first 10 minutes really is. So much effort to establish that it's 1997 ('Why would someone kill Princess Di?' 'I'm going to put on some Backstreet Boys and go to sleep'), which is ultimately so unimportant. The terrible actresses who are clearly *not* twins. That lady lawyer who talks like Dennis Miller. The naked yoga with the Sonicare. Pacino doing that weird cross-eyed face on the phone with William Forsythe. YOINKS.

I've listened to this episode at least 5 times. Pete Holmes is a great energy balance for the show. He brings a sincere, positive, inquisitiveness with him similar to June ratcheted up to 11.
