I can not recommend this enough but you need to do Atlas Shrugged. It was just out and flopped so bad it should be on DVD by now. Think of all those rich Ayn Rand jokes just waiting to be unleashed.

It was unendingly hilarious when the first edition of the DVD of the first part* came out with a description on the back claiming it was a tale of sacrifice, and they had to rush to replace it with "heroic self-interest."

 

It's also hilarious to realize that this was a project getting kicked around Hollywood for years, with actresses like Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron considering the lead female role, which now went to the lead of a short-lived NBC drama and, in the sequel, the female lead from "Super Mario Brothers."

 

* Whoever decided that this was a 3-part series was delusional. It makes sense for something like "Lord of the Rings," where there's a bunch of stuff happening over three books, but when your book ends with a long speech, maybe you should just consider editing.

I watched this movie the other night, both part one and part two. it feels like a made for tv movie and makes you question if it ever really did play in theaters to begin with. it feels like a right to video type of movie.

 

I love Ray Wise and Twin peaks so as soon as part two was realeased it peaked

my curiosity so I watched it. I was really very boring this really terribly bad told movie doesn't seem to ever really go anywhere. I am not sure it would make a great edition to the HDTGM show. The first part has no real actors in it that you've ever heard of and the second part has some actors if you can call them that, that you may have seen in television. even teller of the magic group Penn and teller shows up for a cameo and he even talks...

 

there is this repeated theme of who is John Galt who keeps showing up in a trenchcoat at certain parts of the movie but mostly at the end of a scene at key events in the movie. but it's never really explained why he shows up or who he is and we never see his face at all. this is all setup for part three i think. they quickly cut away.

 

It's overly confusing this film at times and it seems like a simple story but it takes place over two generations of familys. it has a lot of strong themes about goverment and oil companys controlling prices and taxs. sorta whats going on right now. but I found my self well losing interest in it as fast as I got into it.

 

not sure if I'll watch part three.. ohh well.

BTW I never read the book, I feel like officer bob brady after he learned to read and was given this book. LOL I am sure it's a good book but I'll never know.

Maybe it's good that you never see his face, because you probably wouldn't recognize him anyway in the third one when none of the actors come back for that one either.

I wanted the movie to be good. I enjoyed the book to certain extent and wanted to see what they'd do...

 

It was filmed on what looked to be pro-sumer cameras. I read through a forum on it, that the production co. that bought the rights to the film sat on it for years and years, and then just before they were going to lose the license they scrambled to cobble this movie together.

 

I love that sometimes they get the lighting and scene almost decent then terrible (terrible!) CGI will come up that just makes your eyes roll...

I was more astonished to see that the trailer showed Jon Polito and Michael Lerner in small-but-apparently-important roles. Did the Coens not have anything they could throw their way?

Yeah, I love Ray Wise, so this bit of news is a bit disturbing.

 

Anyway, while you might not be able to discuss it apolitically, this goes beyond a belief that is more popular among people with views rather far from the mainstream, but rather a shitty movie that does a VERY bad job in making the case for that worldview. Not that I think the guys would have a problem discussing the idea.

 

 

This looks pretty odd. I love the Colbert bit about the fact that basically everything the protagonist says makes him seem like a bad guy in a normal film.

 

Also, railroads? Shouldn't this be a period piece?

PLEASE do this movie! I have never watched a set of movies... which you really need to watch together (at a length of more than 5 hours!!!)... that are nearly as long as their source material, the 1168 page novel. The movie is completely devoid of character development. The movie could be summed up as a The Great Gatsby meets The Economist. Most of the movie is just news clips talking about the unemployment rate, the price of oil, and socialist chicanery.

It's been almost ten years since this film came out, and it needs to be reviewed. Each installment of the film (3 films total) had to completely recast every role because I'm sure the earlier actors didn't want anything to do with the series anymore. Anyway, bump.

I'd rather just play the Bioshock series again, it deals with the ideas of the book a lot better than the filmmakers ever could. Also it is amazing that they could not get a single actor to return from one film to the next, as if three different studios were tasked with making the movie, and the person in charge of it all just said "fuck it, we'll take pieces of each and make one saga." The only reason I could see them covering this series is that it is chock full of HDTGM All Stars from a cursory glance of the casts.

Plus the Bioshock series is just fucking great (especially the first one). I’ve heard the films described and they sound punishingly long. There is a limit at which bad movies stop becoming fun (and some  movies never even get there).

Yeah having listened to the recent crossover episode of HDTGM and How Did This Get Played where Paul and Jason shared their gaming history as they discussed Street Fighter: the Movie: the Game, both discussed their love of the series and overall the episode was fantastic to listen to. I know that ever since the first one came out a movie has been in development hell, but it's one of those story types that doesn't translate well into a feature film, especially the first one who's twist is reliant on player interaction. Plus the sheer cost of trying to make a film based on those games would be gigantic as it would have to be almost completely CGI for sets and effects.
