Musical Mondays-Week 7-Cabaret!

Recommended Posts

Guys I really have to step up my C+O game this week if for no other reason but I want to force Scheer to say 'Baby CakeBug'. It'll be my gift to tomspanks.

I'll be sure to pass on my great ideas on to you!

Home from work, so I can finally comment! First of all, I went into this musical knowing almost nothing about it, aside from a couple songs my roommate remembered. While I cannot say I loved it, I can definitely say it was an entertaining watch.

Minor note, we watched it with subtitles and it kept throwing me off, because my roommate and I both studied some German in high school, and I was like "Why are they translating 'Fraulein' to 'Miss'? Is it that difficult?" Things like that. I kept distracting myself lol

As others stated, it was interesting how it brought in topics that weren't usually approached at that time. I can appreciate that. It's very in your face, and uncomfortable, which I think is the point, especially with so much of it wrapped around living in denial. I think it was very well put together, but I also don't feel like I took much away from it.

Joining in on the topic of Brian's sexuality, I'm going to lean more towards what Cam Bert was saying and go with it's not something that can really be labeled (at this time). I think he's still on the road to discovering himself, and he never ever says "I like X" to anyone. I believe he's the one who started kissing first when trying to comfort Sally during her breakdown, but so much of this movie is people getting caught up in the moment that it's hard to get a sense of how they truly feel inside. Again, because often they're following delusions.

What I found most interesting was how Sally and Brian especially did not judge each other or their lifestyles. When Sally gets the idea that Brian may not like women, she immediately backs off out of respect. When they do hook up, Brian does not try to change Sally or get her out of her world of cabaret. When Sally has the abortion, he is upset, but accepts her reasoning with forgiveness. They are such an odd pair, but their friendship grows deep.

Max was such an odd character to me btw, but I also found it interesting that although he initially went after Sally, he fully accepted Brian in as well. The cigarette holder he gives Brian, I at first thought was just an afterthought to try to placate a jealous lover, but looking back... Everything Max bought for Sally she asked for, but the cigarette holder he bought specifically with Brian in mind, without any input. It was thoughtful.

But Max also just dumps them to escape out to Argentina, so he's not that good of a friend lol

I got a bit into the relationship between Fritz and Natalia. I think I enjoyed them the most. It's so hard though, because they are characters I'd truly want to be happy, but with that setting, it sure looks bleak...

Anyway, I think I'll leave it there. I feel I rambled enough.

I feel like the key to this gif would be to now say 'THIS IS A RAMBLE' and then really go nuts ranting. But the point is mostly to say that that's not a ramble, that's a great set of observations. Ramble on, Jam!

I mean, I could be more rambly if you really want, but it's not gonna be anything significant.

It took me a while before I got that the cabaret show songs WERE related to the story.

Also I felt bad I didn't recognize Liza Minnelli when I had seen her on The Muppet Show. I missed her name during the opening credits. She's a great performer.

None of the guys rate high on the TN Scale imho.

And agreed that Max's moustache was hard to see at first and just looked weird the whole time.

I loved how Natalia was taller than Fritz.

I enjoyed the song "Mein Herr" but it went on so long I ended up checking my phone.

The mannequin game is strong in this movie.

I don't think Brian is the right person to translate that erotic novel.

"Brian? Are you sure zat zis is de way zat zit luff scene between the Baron undt ze noblewoman should be?"

"What's wrong with it?"

"I had an English publisher read it zis mornink. He says der moments uff true passion are all now includink ze tea drinkink undt talkink of ze weazzer."

"Quite, quite. I shouldn't be surprised if they never let me back into England, peddling such smut."

"But..."

"Don't you tell me that you want people looking into each others' eyes or speaking in second-level innuendo! I write as is fit!"

(etc)

Guys can we branch out sometime and do Crazy Ex-Girlfriend? I started rewatching the first season and this show is so great and I know I'm committed an original sin by mentioning a TV show but y'aaallllllll.

Agreed! My only gripe about it is that as one-hour episodes they tend to a drag a little in the middle. I know the logistics of the musical numbers must be fairly huge but having 2-3 per ep means I spend a lot of time looking forward to the next song, and not really enjoying some of the millennial angst.

Plus I hate Valencia.

I do, however, have a massive crush on Rachel Bloom. So I'd be all about discussing this (although i'm still halfway through season 1).

Oh man CakeBug I can not WAIT for you to continue on through this next season.

I also have a massive crush on Rachel Bloom and also on Santino Fontana (which when I figured out he was fuckin' Hans in Frozen I lost my SHIT).

I like the first season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, but I've had a really hard time getting into season 2. I don't think I like the songs as much as I did for the first season, and that might be part of it. Also, Paula is my favorite character, and it bums me out that she's not participating in Rebecca's hijinks anymore, especially because she's the impetus behind so many of the hijinks in the first season.

I also want more Heather because she is my second favorite, and I feel like she's getting less and less attention ever since she and Greg broke up.

Just talked to my mother for her Ted Neeley Handsome Thoughtsâ„¢ specifically on the issue of of Max and his milk mustache. She has never seen Cabaret or saw it but couldn't remember it. So I had to find a picture of Max to show her. Her overall thoughts,

(This is the picture I showed her)

0cbc440a8e3d0b2c2d63c3ca3ad6b8ec.jpg

"No, you're right about it being weird. If it was a proper mustache and not that Clark Gable style it would look better."

"So grow a big mustache or go home?"

"Well he needs it. He'd look 19 if you shaved it off him. Like Leonardo DiCaprio."

"Yea Leo is kinda permanent baby face. Some people like that."

"True. He's very popular with the ladies."

"So a young face makes you handsome?"

"No I wouldn't say handsome. Cute or charming I suppose."

TL;DR: Blonde mustaches are okay if they're big and you aren't handsome if you have a baby face.

Me too. When I told her that the people online(you all) liked her thoughts on Ted Neeley her basic reply was "I'm too old for people to listen to my thoughts on men." I actually believe she referred to herself as a fuddy-duddy rather than old.

Oh, and because I told her we talk about musicals she asked when were we going to talk about Showboat. I told her when it gets made into a movie and she was shocked it was never made into one.

My mom said, "Oh, there's a great one you should do. It's called: (slowly and deliberately) 'Laughing in the Rain."

"Laugh? Are you talking about "Singin' in the Rain?"

"Yes! It's a great one!"

"First of all, yes it is (although, if you can't remember the name...)? And second, literally EVERYONE has seen it."

Haha! Maybe for everyone's second pick we should all defer to suggestions from our mothers.
