Another one, Christmas from a different point of view.

If we've headed to instrumentals maybe we can veer to spoken word for a moment. A nice Christmas story from Geoffrey Lewis (The Lawnmower Man) and Celestial Navigations.

I watched the movie yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm glad I bought instead of renting it. Will definitely watch it again.

well if you're gonna give us some Joan, it's only appropriate to follow it up with Bob Dylan's out-of-nowhere album full of Christmas carols a few years ago. it rules

ok, this is cheating, but this entire album is a Christmas classic. My mom has played it every year since I was a kid. I can’t pick a “best” song off of here, so I’ll let people decide for themselves. Apologies if this seems lazy.

I also enjoyed the movie! A good Thanksgiving pick.

My brother and sister-in-law took their kids to Disneyland when my niece was 5 and nephew was 3. In my opinion, that was a little young because a lot of rides freaked them out, although they did like the Cars section of the park, I guess. Although when I went with my brother when we were kids, he was around 6 or 7 and we both loved it (I was around 11). Obviously, I think it depends on how well kids handle lines/walking/rides in general. If you have brave toddlers, go for it! But Tickets are expensive enough that you might want to wait until they’re old enough to enjoy it. I don’t know if that helps, but that’s been my family’s experience.

I have an important question about the Transformers DVD guessing game. Do the ones given away at the live show count? Because I think at least 200 then. I also have a random question inspired by the "baby chairs" caller. I know Paul is a big fan of rides and Disney so maybe I should call in. But I would welcome forum input as well. How young is too young to bring a kid to Disney? We are having a disagreement in my family. I know some people bring infants and such, but is that a huge pain? My mom is insistent that a child has to be old enough to walk the entire time (no baby chairs) and old enough to remember.

I voted for the movie to stay, but it was a closer call than I expected going in. This movie really is a tough sit, a lot of time spent with very unpleasant characters in a not particularly propulsive narrative. The only reason it works at all is probably the superlative craft at play: the direction, acting, photography, editing, sound design, etc. And I would also argue that the film clearly gives the impression that the filmmakers know it's about unpleasant people and want that to be the point you take away from it, as a way of subverting the usual heroic boxing movie narrative about an underdog coming back to win. Nope, this time the guy reaches the top fairly quickly, then slowly deteriorates because of his own psychological issues. This is usually what a lifetime of punching and getting punched for a living actually results in. I do agree with Paul & Amy that #4 seems too high a placement. Scorsese's other AFI 100 movies carry a lot more cultural cache and influence than this one IMO, as well-made as it is. I'd bump this one further down.

I was going to post this one but went with The Ramones instead! Great (Cameron) minds!

As soon as I saw Phil Silvers my mind was made.

I really loved Alyssa Milano's slow burn plan of altering the profit split between the gangs, waiting for them to notice their pay stubs were different, and then assuming the gangs would riot and overthrow Robert Patrick. Especially her restraint in just bumping up one gang's split by like 15%. I guess to be fair in this world one of those gangs would have been all accountants so they'd notice. It also shows that the communistic economic model that Robert Patrick established really seemed to be thriving up to that point. They totally controlled the nights of New Angeles with each gang taking an exactly even split.
