Episode 158 - Body Parts: LIVE!

Recommended Posts

Wait a sec. I'm wrong about K'un Lun?

I thought it disappeared, Brigadoon style, not destroyed.

Maybe...

I thought the fact that the bloodied Hand Ninjas were there implied it was destroyed. Regardless, he wasn't doing his goddamn job.

My question is why did it need to be a death row inmate at all? People donate their body to science all the time. There wasn't a single person who would fit the criteria for this crazy surgery? Seems a lot more complicated to do the whole get a court order thing. And was the judge drunk that day when he cleared this? (Also not on board with the mother theory. Earlier posts pointing out his DOB make that pretty clear in my opinion.)

So someone edited out any mention of Dr. Webb being Charlies mother in the movie on the wiki. Which makes sense because theres zero mention of it during the film.

So it seems like they weren't related which makes this movie even fucking crazier.

I think you're right on that - I think the mother theory is someone stretching to understand why this particular death-row inmate is so intrinsic to this experiment. I mean, if a serial killer's limbs will take the skills the serial killer had and will meld with the skills the recipient has - we should assume that Remo Lacey's artistic talent is solely responsible for the paintings that are made, and not that Charlie Fletcher was also a talented artist, or that Charlie was a kickass basketball player in between murders - then why not try the experiment on someone with something to add to society? A genius concert pianist's arms grafted to a regular person might carry on that pianist's talent after they've died, right? Or a visionary stock market trader's limbs might help people absorb their insight and ability? There must be a hundred better candidates for this surgery than Charlie Fletcher. This is why I think that people are trying to make the link between the doctor and the killer, because she must have an ulterior motive - which is heightened by the fact that she is present when Charlie has his accident.

The only thing I can think of is that the doctor and the killer WERE mother and son in an early draft of the screenplay, before it was cast. After they had their cast and after shooting and editing, that fact got lost in the shuffle or was actively cut because it feels a bridge too far. It's not impossible that the Wikipedia article was written by someone with prior knowledge of an earlier draft, and if there was a director's cut of this movie that fact might emerge, although I really don't think it fits for all the reasons already examined.

And while we're here - the doctor clearly didn't know that Charlie's limbs were going to go crazy and that his personality would be in the limbs. Once this became clear, WHY didn't the doctor double down on her Nobel Prize application by bringing Bill and the others back for more testing? This is clearly an astonishing medical breakthrough, that personalities can be transmitted through limbs. But no, she treats Bill like he's crazy and has already moved on to transplanting heads. She literally tells Bill that 'transplanting arms is so last season' and who cares that Bill's arm has a mind of its own. I think the world would be fascinated to know this fact, and she just blows it off.

Yeah, I think this is a bummer. Here's the cached wikipedia edit: the strikethrough section was the part that was cut.

Dr. Webb pulls up in her car and comforts him, revealing that Charley is her son and her diabolical plan becomes clear: she chopped up her son into pieces to keep him alive and put him back together again later (instead of letting him be executed via electric chair).

This was removed by reason of 'unsourced opinion' which I guess is fair enough, but I'd be curious to know whether that opinion was written by a fan or someone connected with the film. The summary is already flagged for being too detailed, which suggests either a superfan or someone who knows the plot intimately (like the screenwriter).

Plenty of edits have happened on the Body Parts wiki this week, which is absolutely thanks to the HDTGM episode. The undisputed highlight is the editing of the phrase 'finger-bangs' into 'pleasures': http://imgur.com/a/RYYPR

There's no way that Iron Fist isn't mentioned in some way in the minisode.

Iron Fist was an all-you-can-eat buffet at Golden Corral. Body Parts was barely an after dinner mint.

I had no idea who Lewis Tan was, but I loved his scene so much!

not really into those netflix shows but our old friend lexi alexander has had some stuff to say about iron fist. my favourite:

"Probably a bad sign when a Kung Fu show starts with the actors not bowing correctly" followed by

"it takes skill to get the bow wrong"

i don't think shes a fan ... but she is a fan of Lewis Tan and she's been working on something with him. Not sure what it is but looking at this BTS they were not messing about: https://www.instagram.com/p/BRxJIwZhSnK/

Just as a Public Service Announcement, Googling "tumbleweed gif" with safe search off will pull up a shocking amount of porn.

Have I gotten so old that I don't know about "tumbleweeding?"

Is it just me or is listening to Paul do condom ads, um...unsettling?

The audio commercials are fine, but the extended ones he posts on his secret YouTube channel are terrible! He doesn't even mention the product by name...

Oh, I have. Granted, the one that starts out all ASMR is pretty erotic, but the others are just vile. The man has children for Christ's sake!

You mentioned before all of the whitewashing controversy that’s been swirling around Iron Fist. Could you expand on that a bit?

Yeah, someone made me vaguely aware of that. I try not to think about it too much. I have so little patience for some of the feelings that some people have. I mean, I understand where it’s coming from. You know, cultural appropriation, my god. It’s just an adventure story. Don’t these people have something better to do than to worry about the fact that Iron Fist isn’t Oriental, or whatever word? I know Oriental isn’t the right word now, either.

Roy Thomas, creator of Iron Fist.
