Completely surprised at the indifference Paul and Amy had to this movie. I also disagree that Pakula's direction is "unshowy." There's a lot of interesting creativity in there, and the ability to make clear sense of this story is also terrific, let alone to make it so entertaining. It does lead me to something I was wondering: does being a "true" story affect your views on its greatness (either positively or negatively)? I personally do tend to lean to fiction in movie preferences, in general, though I do think this movie is amazing and one of my favorites of this series so far. We're all used to these AFI movies now, and they all have a certain conceit of drama and I was vastly entertained by this one not having some of those things. Not getting typical drama stuff like Woodward and Bernstein's personal lives or whatnot really made this stand-out among the bunch we've seen.

So I'm thinking about writing another letter to the boys, but I only want to do it if they want another letter. If they're like, "Wtf is this? Paper!? Gross!" Then I don't want to do it and I'd rather do something else wasteful with my time. This is a difficult decision for me.

Woah, I've been a big fan of Soup in the Afternoon for years and I can't believe I got a shout out live on the air! I really do enjoy that program where Martha comes from. "Tragic Rodeo Birthday Clown Horse Surprise" I believe it's called. I keep trying to Google it to make sure, but Google must be broken because it's not showing up and I'm pretty sure I'm not wrong. I'll give the internet a call and get it fixed because people should see that show, and Martha is fantastic in it. Keep up the good work by keeping us informed, Soup! And if I could I'd like to make a song request for "Bat Dance" and get the funk up this afternoon!

Which I really didn't think was a sustainable premise for a show, but man, once you see how many people show up to a horses birthday you can really see it has legs. My theater laughed a lot! I laughed at that line too! There were a couple of points where people even laughed (like when Elizabeth Moss's tether was reacting to seeing her husband die) that I actually was like lord this isn't funny to me cause it's like making me really uncomfortable. But I think the biggest laughs were for Tim because his slapstick was really on point and that NWA drop when Elizabeth tried to ask Alexa to call the police. I was totally expecting The Police to then play but NWA's "Fuck The Police" was even better and our theater lost it.

Also, am I the only one who laughed at a lot of the jokes in this movie? I laughed so hard at "Nobody wants your boat, dad" and not a single person did in my theater. I don't know that I heard anyone laugh at all except me during this.

I just saw this. I think it's visually nice throughout. Lupita Nyong'o is fantastic in her duel roles. I love that they made I Got 5 On It a horror song. But I have all the same questions everyone else in this thread had. So, I enjoyed the first half a lot. The second half I kept asking myself, "Why?" and that never really let up. Every time I try to answer a question or follow a thread that doesn't quite add up to me, it keeps unraveling. It's really disappointing because, as everyone has said, there's so much attention to detail in so many aspects that to falter at the major themes of the movie feels really lazy for lack of a better word. And I know Jordan Peele isn't lazy. He's put a lot of thought into this and it shows. But then I think about the contradictory elements of what I think it's theme about socioeconomic classes or the nature of life for the tethers doesn't make much sense, it just keeps falling apart for me. Everyone else here has kind of said what I've thought probably better than I can. I might have been able to let some of that slide because a lot of horror movies require you to just accept it's major conceit because you just have to. I don't need to know why Michael Myers is the boogey man. I don't need to know the origin of the It Follows monster. And so on. I just need to know that's how the world works. I think Us is trying to do more than that but failing at it's own conceits. Part of me thinks I would have been happier if the doppelgangers existed for no real reason and were never explained. The best comparison I can make is between Us and Zootopia. Zootopia is about race but it also heavily implies that the people of color are literal carnivorous super predators who must suppress their natural instincts to fit in with society. That's something a lot of racist people tacitly agree to or sometimes openly say. Us is about economic classes but also heavily implying that the lower classes are literal soulless monsters who deserve to be locked away. And so many wealthy people on Fox News talking heads have implied or openly said similar things. I don't think Jordan Peele meant to say that about the poor in this country, but it's still in this movie. So, I don't know, the more I think about this movie, the more I find myself not liking it. I'm mildly curious how I'll feel on a rewatch but I think it will only make intensify my polarization. I'll appreciate the details more but dislike the messiness of it's themes more.

I like Martha but I don't think she should replace Tom. 15 Tom eps and 15 Martha eps a year still leaves plenty of weeks for other (worse) guests

If I don't get to see Rocket try and kill Goose then I'm going to be very disappointed! I was already slightly disappointed that he wasn't the one who got to point out that he was not a cat but indeed a Flerken like he did in the comics. It's truly one of my favorite panels!

Just a heads up, I misheard the the 2nd Question in Ask Paul segment. I’m kinda mortified. I thought she said, her friends who had been together for 18years brokeup and she was upset that she was listed as his emergency contact. Since she wasn’t in the reationship, I asked why are you so angry at him? Which is a terrible response. That’s what I get for prepping C&Os and answering VMs. We will delete it.

As a father of two, I 100% concur with Paul’s parenting advice. First of all, you’re never going to be in such dire need for unsolicited parenting advice that you actually need to search something out. And secondly, like he said, what works for one child won’t necessarily work for yours. Hell, with everything being equal with my own two kids, I have to adjust how I parent to suit their individual personalities. Like Paul said, go with your gut. No one will ever understand your children’s little idiosyncrasies like you do. People have successfully raised children before podcasts and parenting books and so can you. Just accept that you’re not perfect and you’re going to fuck up, but as long as your heart’s in the right place, you’l be okay.

In my opinion I think that scene where she breaks out of the Supreme Intelligence was an unspoken way of her presenting who she is, because she's also become more quippy and way more full of sass. So for me at the end if she had said that I think it would've just been too on the nose and felt too orchestrated by writers. Cause I think this whole time that's exactly what Jude Law was wanting from her, she was supposed to prove herself worthy to him over and over and was deemed too emotional each time. From a female perspective that all rang sooo true and I believe the point is that emotional reactions are also conscious decisions but when a woman does them they are seen as emotional and wrong. No matter what Carol said in that moment it was her decision to end that at that moment because she wasn't going to fight by his ridiculous rules anymore. He was scared of her true power plain and simple and wanted to show that in a fist fight she wouldn't win against him. Once again he wanted her to prove that she was actually strong. It was a perfect moment.

I'm going to go on record saying this movie was more feminist than Wonder Woman. LOOOOOOVED it and have seen it twice in the theatre. I . might go a third time. I"m only just coming around to the MCU. This was just so, so great. I am planning on seeing Avengers: End Game just to see Brie Larson's Captain Marvel. Love her.

I'd listen to a Rocket from the Tombs series. But my personal vote would be Camper Van Beethoven.

I got into REM when they appeared on a local radio show promoting Fables of the Reconstruction, but became obsessed with them when Lifes Rich Pageant came out. This is one of my favorite albums of all time and never tire of listening to it. This is a perfect album from start to finish.

So sad news. I just got home from a vet checkup for my darling cat Albus and sadly I had to put him down today. He had two emergency urinary tract blockage surgeries two weeks ago and a new one formed . They were going to keep forming . The vet said I did everything I could and after crying for nearly two hours it's over. I only had him for two years but Ioved him enough for two lifetimes. I still have his dad Godric and maybe in the fall I might go back to his breeder because she has another cat that needs to be placed and gets picked on like Godric did. I'm actually feeling better now ( it might be the migraine meds) but I was wondering what you guys turn to that lifts your spirits besides this podcast?
