EPISODE 13 - A Dental Convention in Scottsdale, Arizona: Live from Largo

Recommended Posts

Paul F. Tompkins welcomes Los Angeles AND the internet to the first LIVE episode of Spontaneanation recorded at the world-famous Largo at The Coronet! This time Paul’s special guest is actor Colin Hanks of Orange County & Fargo! They chat about why Colin chose to wear the outfit he had on that night, feeling awkward at a fancy buffet inside Dodger’s Stadium, and his personal high school uniform. Paul is then joined by Spomtaneanation all-stars Craig Cackowski, Marc Evan Jackson, and Janet Varney to improvise a story set at a Dental Convention in Scottsdale, Arizona (on the hottest day of the year). As always, the miraculous Eban Schletter scores it all on piano!

The next LIVE Spontaneanation happens at Largo on Saturday, July 11th! GET YOUR TICKETS NOW! bit.ly/SPONT715

I had the immense pleasure of attending this particular live show; I am very excited I can now revisit that night any time I want.

That's right, i just got a time machine. But having the recording is neat too! I look forward to sharing it with my fellow Cack Attackers.

God I love PFT when he's riffing in front of a live audience. It's such a great time.

What are the chances I could persuade Mr. Tompkins into bringing his show to Ohio? I can't pay you, promise that anyone other than me and my friends would show up, or provide any venue other than my home, but I can promise that I would greatly appreciate it!

Dr. Baseball Ecstasy sounds like a delightful pornstar name or a DJ.

Also, Jon Lovitz had me laughing so hard.

Haven't yet listened to this episode, so maybe it's explained, but when did Colin Hanks turn into Jermaine Clement? Like, was it slowly or all of a sudden? Come to think of it, I've never seen them in the same room together, but, no... that's too crazy to even consider

Janet Varney has the best laugh!

And we got her for two weeks in a row! I heard her and Marc Evan Jackson's laughs pretty early on and was very excited.

Also, Colin Hanks has always been totally delightful on CBB, so I'm glad to see him turn up here. He seems to really get whatever format he's thrown into and will play straight into it. Even down to his simple response of "I've never heard it called that, but okay..." when Paul called press junkets "PJs," he always entertains.

God I love PFT when he's riffing in front of a live audience. It's such a great time.

And this, 100%. I love his riffs on the studio episodes, but this made me wish every episode was a live one. There's a reason he's known for his riffs (and why they're the tracks I've listened to the most on his albums). He feeds off of the audience energy so well, and his preramble was the best one so far this week because of that.

Do we know if this episode was recorded chronologically after the one with Open Mike Eagle? I'm always fascinated by who asks what questions. The question to Mike (since I initially referred to him as "Open Mike," I feel like I can now "let the Mikes fly) last week about social anxiety seemed like it was probably an Aimee Mann question. I'm curious if he gave the question about why Colin chose his outfit. Next to Dave Foley's "Where were you when you realized God was a wholly implausible lie?" I think this might be my favorite question so far.

Finally, I know we say this every week, but damn it if Eban Schletter isn't onlllllyyyyyyy the best. Oh, and according to his website, he really is a lawyer. I really wasn't sure if Paul was making that up or not.

I think Paul confirmed on Twitter today that it was.

This was a nice follow-up to Colin's appearance on The JV Club, which I just listened to yesterday.

Am I crazy, or did someone (most likely Paul on last week's CBB) recently (after this would have been recorded) reference the prayer hands and how they associate it with Jeremy Piven?

I'm pretty sure that was Paul as Mike the Janitor from last week's CBB. I know Pivening was mentioned on something I've heard him do recently.

And you're right. He did confirm it earlier:

It's a tossup between Janet and Natasha Leggero. But either way, aren't laughs great, you guys?

Also, I absolutely love hearing PFT talk about the Hulk.

Also also, SHOCKING TWIST TO THE MITCH/DOLORES SAGA!

I probably should wait 'til the end of the episode to post, rather than keep editing the post as I hear stuff.

Hello once again to Speakeasy with Paul F. Tompkins. Paul's guest this time out is Hannibal Buress.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSMNnDQ_Ttg

In this week's

, Paul challenges Hannibal to a game of "Would You Rather". Does Hannibal make any classic "Would You Rather" blunders? Watch and find out!

Can we talk a minute about PFT's delighted laugh/giggle when those few audience members indicated they had no idea what the show was?

It's right up there with his off-mic "Oh no!" for me.

ETA: Also loved the Morse shout-out for the Brits at the beginning.

Ok. I've tried to hold this in for 10 weeks as not to be a negative nancy...but God damn, I can't anymore. Janet Varney's laugh is killing me. I love this show, love PFT, this shit is hilarious and awesome. But Varney's fake ass ridiculous sounding absurd laugh is making this show unlistenable. That is all. Sorry for the negativity. But maybe...don't have her on anymore? Thanks

I was sad to find only Jon Lovitz singing 'Take Me Out To The Ball Game' on youtube.

I hope one day he records the American national anthem for us all to enjoy, as clearly it must be the purest form of patriotism.

Aw shit, here goes.

Acknowledging that you're being a dick doesn't make you less of a dick, no one else is bothered by her laugh, most people don't control how their laughs sound, Paul probably doesn't choose guests based on your whining, your post is pointless, etc. etc. etc. Fuck off.

Hmmm. Well actually you can keep your rude negativity to yourself. It's really really easy. Unless someone is holding a gun to your head, you don't need to click that ol' Post button! And if someone has a gun to your head, try to surf to www.police.com instead of here!

Hope this helps! :)

edit: did not mean to pile on, let's get back on topic.

Is there a reason Paul doesn't reveal who asked the question from the previous episode? I know we can figure it out chronologically for the most part, but it seems a little weird to deliberately obscure that aspect.
