The guys touched on this a little bit, but I think it deserves more attention. In the beginning of the movie, the daughter goes to a sleepover and the parents have a date night in the house and reminisce about their past. Duchovny tells a story about how on the second night of their honeymoon in Provence, he had to find her a roast beef sandwich or else they weren’t gonna bone for the rest of the trip? First, they’re only on the second night in Provence, so it feels too early to start craving food from home, unless they started their honeymoon earlier at a different location. But secondly, why would anyone crave a roast beef sandwich? It’s not some exotic food that’s hard to obtain and I feel like Provençal beef stew would be an acceptable alternative to satisfy the craving. So I think the natural conclusion is that the roast beef sandwich is some sort of a kink and she needed it or else there wasn’t gonna be any sex for the rest of the honeymoon.

I'm just going to add, I think someone is trolling everyone asking for QUEEN OF THE DAMNED. This film was directed by Vincent Perez, whose acting resume has at least two (possibly three films) that would be ripe for HDTGM; Queen of the Damned, the Crow: City of Angels, and I Dreamed of Africa (this is the possible one as I literally don't remember anything about this except the title and it was Kim Basinger's first film after winning an Oscar).

Based on Sam's derision regarding her mother's crappy photography and her friends' negative response to her telling them that she was working on a project for the yearbook, am I to understand that Hannah just took it upon herself to pick up new electives mid-semester that better suited her own interests? I thought she was going to school and keeping Sam's academic seat warm as a favor for when her consciousness returned? Yearbook is clearly not something Sam was into. Was she just like, "Yes, there's a very good chance that my daughter's immortal soul is irrevocably trapped in purgatory for all eternity, but while we wait to find out, I might as well make the most of it and get in some of those good, good photography hacks."

Kim Basinger won an Oscar? I had forgotten about that, which led me to her IMDb page, which led me to learn that she was nominated for a Saturn Award by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, & Horror films for her role in Cellular.

To add to this - aside from the Google search heard 'round the world, I don't recall them doing anything to try to figure out how to get the daughter back. I  may have blocked it out, but the characters feel completely resigned to a "well, this will all sort itself out somehow!" mentality, and then poof! the daughter's back (or IS she?). It just feels so passive and unresolved. You can tell it's a remake of an adaptation of a remake of an adaptation. It's not so clear anymore. If it ever was.

Maybe she just really loves Arbys.

Maybe this movie is just a response to Nihilist Arby's, since even if you die after roast beef, you can actually come back as your daughter

As a former Arby's asst. manager in my younger days, I can confirm this is all true

I haven't finished the movie yet, but yeah, so far they were just like "ugh we have to wait 7 years."  I really think they believe the condition will resolve on its own in 7 years and that's why the wife is concerned with getting good grades and applying to college.

If you're looking for a film that might give you the same icky feelings as this one, hop on to Netflix and search for "Don't Worry Baby" starring John Magaro and Christopher McDonald. In case it's not on your Netflix or you just can't be arsed, here is the description:

Don't Worry Baby
(R) - 2016 - 87 min.
Discovering that they both slept with the same woman, a photographer and his philandering dad wrangle over which of them is the father of her child.

The woman they both rawdogged appears to be Dreama Walker from Don't Trust The B. So, that all sounds great.

Here are my random thoughts from my notes:

  • As a librarian, I can confidently tell you that there are people out there that do Google searches that are as bad as the "scientific research" search that Duchovney did. I am constantly amazed at what kind of bad search terms people use.
  • IMDB says that this movie takes place in Williamstown, MA, although I think they use a fictitious town name in the movie. Williamstown is a really small town in western MA. Their high school only has about 550 students total but the school depicted in the movie looked much, much bigger than that.  And how much time is supposed to have passed in this movie? It's never winter and yet, winter in Western MA goes on for a good chunk of the school year.
  • Finally, the horny guidance counselor shows up for her eye appointment and Duchovney seems surprised to see her, like she didn't have a scheduled appointment. I know my eye doctor doesn't take drop in appointments but maybe Duchovney does. That seems typical of him.

The school is John Abbott College in Montreal. It has approximately 7000 students.

There was a celebrated indie movie in the early 90s (unfortunately titled Spanking The Monkey) where a lonely mom who is recovering from a broken leg develops a sexual relationship with her son. But yeah, not surprisingly it is not high on the list of subject matter for screenwriters.

Except porn, of course. Even an infrequent consumer of PornHub like myself can't help but notice the uptick in recent years of porn that is incest-adjacent, usually about step-siblings or step-parents. Why the cultural fascination with incest in the West lately? No idea. For porn it's not so hard to figure out - they follow the zeitgeist and make more of whatever is getting viewed the most. But why the underlying interest? Some weird fin-de-siecle/fin-de-mille, impending environmental collapse thing? Oppressive religions? It is disturbing, whatever the cause.

ETA: Spanking the Monkey was David O. Russell's first film! Wow.

I am kind of fascinated by this trend in porn.  I loved reading Mary Roch's book Boink on sex and sexual science and would honestly love to read a study on 1. Trends in porn and 2. Why THIS trend specifically?  Is it because that now there in the are billions of choices in porn we are desensitized by what was once thrilling sexually and now have to tread into more taboo ( but still on the surface "ok" vanilla sex with people who technically share only familial relationships not actually blood relatives. Not that it's ok in real life but the situation is more palatable?) ? Or is it something that was kind of a thing that porn makers then decided this is the hot new trend like a fashion magazine might do? Either way I need ANSWERS damnit! If only to put my confused mind to rest.

A bizarre moment for me was at the end when Hannah-as-Sam is signing her friend’s yearbook and when the subject of her handwriting comes up her friend says something like, “I really miss your mother,” and I was just thinking, “You DO???”

This is one of the “friends” who was complicit in the whole, “Let’s get high at your mother’s wake” plan. At no point did I ever feel like any of her friend’s gave a single shit about her mother - at all. When they show up on their doorstep at the beginning, Hannah doesn’t even seem to know who they are. But apparently, unbeknownst to us, this one teenage girl had a real surrogate mother/daughter thing going on with Hannah. Something never brought up until the very last scene just so Hannah-Sam can tell us with a wink that she’s permanently hijacked her daughter’s body.

#Momoftheyear

Ok so my grandmother died two years after my mom did in an insane car accident  on her way to pick me up. I had to get a one time prescription for Valium to make it through the service. If I hadn't I wouldn't have been able to keep it together enough to sit through it.  HOWEVER if  a friend asked me to get high at her wake or my mom's wake I would have murdered them and conveniently gotten rid of the body at the funeral home or cemetery. This girl's friends were trash. Also she had to be on God knows how many meds for her recently almost killed broken body!

At one point, the mother in the daughter's body says something like, "all I wanna do is get laid but I can't, and I'm married!" It's kinda romantic, because she could easily get laid by someone who the daughter was already sleeping with, but she wants it to be her husband. We can all understand why that's a no-go for DD, but I think we're overlooking a solution that would make everyone happy: if ketamine is readily available to the daughter, getting a hold of a roofie and some Viagra should be no problem!

I'm sure you didn't mean it this way but it sounds like want momdaughter to drug and rape her dadhusband?

This just reminded me that I watched this Swedish movie on Netflix called "Kiss Me" or "Kyss Mig" about two adult women who are about to become step sisters and they end up falling in love with each other. It's definitely painted as "oh this isn't right" the whole time but, no spoilers I promise, it's really well told and extremely beautiful to watch.

Or it could be another Adore situation where I'm totally fine watching something and everyone else is like wtf that's creepy lmao. (Not that I watch that kind of porn that's indeed way gross and I'm not into that lol.)

My wife studied kink as part of her PhD - her take when I mentioned this the other day was that for mainstream vanilla porn, incest is essentially one of the last sort-of-legal taboos. And since the porn is clearly fake (in the sense that the various actors are obviously NOT related), it's a guilt-free turn on for the viewer, I guess?

All of the talk in the podcast and elsewhere about this movie being a French production reminded me of films like Cousin, Cousine (remade in the US as "Cousins" with Ted Danson), which explored the much more common idea of first cousins becoming partners. A practice that was very common, especially when women essentially had no real legal rights, in order to ensure that wealth stayed within wealthy families.

I'm also reminded of a German film from a few years ago called Transfer, in which poor African immigrants essentially rent out their bodies for the use of wealthy white Europeans during the day. Kind of like Get Out, but more of a dystopian comment on immigration and entrenched European racism than slavery per se, if memory serves. Well worth checking out if you get the chance.

This is fascinating and I would love to hear your wife's thoughts on this movie! I also kind of want to just pick her brain on a bunch of stuff because SHE sounds like she's doing awesome stuff.

hearing there's a French film about cousins makes me think of the Arrested Development cousin film Les Cousins Dangereux

latest?cb=20120105152328

As a weirdo who is very interested in various royal families and their history I know that  incest via things like cousins and marrying aunts/uncles to their nephews and nieces was a common practice for most of history. It's not as extreme as in Ancient Egypt under  Ptolemaic dynasty. They practiced sibling marriage when they took over Egypt.  Poor Cleopatra got stuck with 2 dumbass idiot brothers that she had to get rid of .

The poster child for Inbreeding Bad !  Has got to be Charles II of Spain. He was from the Spanish line of the Habsburgs ( a family famous for intermarriage). He was so fucked up that when Marie Louise d'Orleans found out she had to marry him and her uncle Louis XIV said he could not have done more for his own daughter she  is  reported to have replied " You could have done more for your niece! "

Ok so what exactly was the plan for Sam? They had no idea when she would come back ( or even if she would but let's assume she would). She's going to have missed a significant amount of time in the world.  How is she going to be able to go back out there like nothing has changed? Because by the time she comes back unless they fake a second accident or trauma people are going to be less forgiving of her odd behavior.

Say she was gone for a year from say 2006 to 2007 when the movie came out.  She missed a LOT. The death of Steve Irwin, Dick Cheney shooting a guy in the fucking FACE and that man then APOLOGIZING TO HIM,the sentencing/ execution of Saddam Hussein, we learned what a monster Mel Gibson is , Oprah yelled at James Frey for A Million Little Pieces, fucking FACEBOOK become open to us mere non collegiate plebs!

Just image how confused she's going to be when she finds out Pluto isn't a planet!!

That's just culture stuff. What about her academics? She's going to struggle with keeping up because she hasn't been to school in a year.  Plus the psychological toll of your parents caring more about wanting to fuck using your body then getting you back or grieving you...

Not to mention she's going to have trouble connecting with her friends because she's missed out on vital in group dynamics.

I shudder to think about what would happen if her mom got her into college then she came back.

One video message isn't going to cut it.

I am trash and love to hate watch the Teen Mom franchise and one of the couples on there are also stepsiblings. They were dating before their parents though? Thankfully said parents are divorced now. It's still super weird.
