With the passing of Curtis Hanson I think it'd be nice to consider LA Confidential for the canon. I think it's an amazing movie, weirdly underrated nowadays. Great writing, great performances, great characterization of Los Angeles in the 1940s...

I think The Matrix is the perfect film to be discussed for inclusion into The Canon. It was a major influence on the movies of the 2000's, basically designing a new blueprint for how blockbuster action sequences would be played out in the future, and its cultural impact is undeniable. The main reason I think it deserves its own episode on The Canon, however, is because it is a movie that is highly entertaining but also highly flawed, and it could be easily argued that the impact it had on the film industry was largely negative. I also know that Devin Faraci is an extreme supporter of the Wachowskis and The Matrix, and I'm very curious to see where Amy Nicholson's opinion falls in comparison to Devin's. Basically, not only does The Matrix deserve to at least be considered for The Canon, I think it would make for a very entertaining episode of The Canon.

Suggestion: The Ray Nicolette Stand Off - Jackie Brown vs Out of Sight

Hey everyone I think a fun vs episode could be "Jackie Brown" against "Out of Sight". I mean picking the one ultimate Ray Nicolette (or Elmore Leaonard) movie for the canon sounds like an interesting spin on the concept. And the movies are both amazing but very different - and fun to talk about. It's kind of interesting how differently Tarantino and Soderbergh adapt source material that is quite similar.- 9 replies

This is an interesting movie, ahead of it's time. Directed by John Huston. Brando as a sort of proto-Chris Cooper from American Beauty but with a lot more nuance. Liz Taylor. Young Robert Forster riding a horse around. Very stylized cinematography. Even if eventually deemed unworthy (or not notorious enough) I think it'd spark a great conversation.

The John Landis/Eddie Murphy team ups that are, in my opinion, both canon-worthy. Could open some very interesting conversation on the controversial nature of some of the jokes within the movies and how they fit into the current correctness landscape. Also, there is always talk of needing more comedies in the canon. Eddie Murphy is truly an institution of American blockbuster cinema and deserves a shot to be among the greats. Honorable Mentions: Beverly Hills Cop, Delirious vs. Raw, Bowfinger.

The Kiss of the Spider Woman (RIP Hector Babenco)

Hey guys! Hector Babenco passed away last night, sadly, and that make me think a bit about his movies. An interesting film of his to discuss for inclusion in The Canon would be THE KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN from 1985. It has amazing performances by Raul Julia and William Hurt (who won an Oscar). It was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay, and lost in all those categories to Out of Africa (!). Despite being in English, it's a South American movie (as I've previously mentioned in another thread, there's yet to be a single movie from down here considered for inclusion in the Canon). There's a lot of interesting themes for Amy and Devin to talk about: it's a prison movie, it's a political movie, there are some gay themes, there is a meta "movie-within-a-movie", etc. And, well, the sad fact that Babenco was an interesting director who never got a lot of audience abroad (i.e. there in the United States), other than stuff like Pixote, Ironweed and Carandiru. Hey guys! Today I unintentionally watched two bizarre supernatural / horror movies about divorce, back to back: THE BROOD (David Cronenberg, 1979) and POSSESSION (Andrzej Zulawski, 1981). The styles are very different, The Brood is more clearly a B-movie, very cheaply made and with some campy elements, while Possession is more of an arthouse movie, but it's also campy in how hysterical and over the top it gets. Their point in common is that both movies deal with a family disintegrating (both movies show the wife as being the active agent of the separation) from a supernatural, creepy perspective, and they were both shot a couple of years apart.

Suggestion: Monty Python and the Holy Grail vs. Life of Brian

I already suggested this at the old forum, but the new forum seems to be more active so I wanted to get people's reactions here. There's been a long debate among Monty Python fans as to which of these is their best film, and I say we put it to rest. I'd currently root for Holy Grail, but I'm willing to listen to arguments for the other side. -

The Canon needs more comedy. I would love to hear a Canon VS episode examining Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles, as these two comedies both made a huge mark in 74/75. I would consider Young Frankenstein an underdog, but the two films are so memorable and so connected that I feel a VS would be the way to go. As a University of Iowa graduate, it would be great to see a film with so many Iowa ties be inducted to the Canon. Gene Wilder and Alex Karras were both UI grads (Go Hawks), and Cloris Leachman is from Des Moines.

Can you dig it? Walter Hill's made some quality films but this is arguably his most famous. I still really enjoy the film but I think there's a bit to discuss with this one in terms of age, sexism (similar to the arguments of Everybody Wants Some!! I imagine) and why anyone thinks it's a good idea to put a butchered Director's Cut as the films only high definition source.

I think this film is brilliant, and we need Aronofsky in the canon. I think Pi, Requiem, Black Swan, etc. would be too "slam dunk" and that Noah would lead to better debate. But I don't know maybe I'm wrong ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

1) To put it simply, it is insanity that Paul Thomas Anderson has not been put into the canon yet. I could say the same for Terrence Malick, but I can save that suggestion for later (Tree of Life Tree of Life). I know these are really basic Serious Film Person movies but really, we're nearly 70 films deep with no PTA. 2) Both of these films, as well as maybe 3 other PTA movies, are bonafide canon and there's little reason to believe they wouldn't be voted in if tackled on at a time. Thus it'd be kind of boring to tackle one or the other on its own. I think these films released exactly 10 years apart, have similarities and differences that could make for interesting discussion about Anderson's style and growth as a filmmaker, and why he's important (or sucks, if you're someone who thinks that.)
