Episode 61 — Pauly Shore, Our Close Friend

Recommended Posts

Engineer Codyboy Cody not only saved the show but we have now proof that he is cool guy since he was stoned once. Should he become permanent Engineer for HH?

Also - I think Chanson should get paid for his in-depth analysis of the show.You're... you're crazy, man. I like you, but you're crazy. Get it? Old School?

The contrast of Hayes and Sean's self-aware satirization with Pauly Shore's total lack of self-awareness made for some really funny stuff.

Talking of Old School, I relistened to an RSS episode recently where Sean was talking about pausing a DVD during the sexy scenes. I did that too with Old School, where the old man dies after the ladies flash him. Also Austin Powers where he takes a bath with Alotta Fagina. Good memories.

A few sexy scenes that I rewatched a lot as an impressionable youth:

1.) Switch (1991) - When Ellen Barkin and Jimmy Smits wake up together after having sex and you see Jimmy Smits' butt.

2.) Sixteen Candles (1984) - When Caroline is taking a shower at the school gym (in hindsight, too sexy for what the scene is).

3.) Dances with Wolves (1990) - Mostly I remember when the Native Americans were having sex next to Kevin Costner but I think there are other sexy scenes in this too.

REAL TALK: I dont know what to think. Was it really that uncomfortable and was Pauly Shore that oblivious, or was the whole episode all a big anti-comedy ruse?

S&H (and yes Engineer C in this episode) are comedic geniuses either way. I loffed quite a bit.

Like that the boys are still railing on Cody even after he saved the show. Glad Codes can dish it as well he gets it served to him.

I think having more mainstream big name guests is a good way to draw in new listeners, but if they don't get it or aren't especially good at it I'm not sure what the net result is. If the interview portion is less hilarious or in synch than usual, will those new listeners stick around? Also, I know that the first time I hear an uncomfortable or un-hilarious interview I am fuckin' OUTTA HERE! And I ain't never coming back. I have enough scary things in my own life, I don't need to listen to scary podcasts.

Honestly, I'd be perfectly happy to listen to all the usual guests in the Earwolf family, endlessly. I really think of the whole set of podcasts as a giant ensemble, and I will follow some of those folks (Besser, 'Zouks, Gourley, PFT, Andy Daly, etc.) wherever they appear and listen to whatever they do.

Speaking of dream guests, I would love to hear any of the Mighty Boosh players on this podcast. And the others. If they ever come to LA, they should just book an entire day and appear on every Earwolf pod. And if they are still alive, I'd love to hear any of the Firesign Theater guys. (Look it up, whippersnappers! Also get off my lawn.)

Finally, I tried to upload a new avatar picture of one of my actual dogs, instead of a meme dog from the internet, and it didn't work. If Engineer Cody is such a G-D hero, why do bad things keep happening to good people?

i love andy daly/gourley/pft etc and any CBB/I4H/etc eps they are on are immediate must listens for me, but I dont know that it would be anything other than diminishing returns to have them return to HH. One of my top 5 episodes of HH was the Sinbad episode--I dont feel like he really knew what was going on, but he ended up just being really out there and that led to a really great ep. Same with this one--I feel like there is some sort of comedic genius in weathering the storm of an uncooperative guest and spinning that into a weird, bizarre amalgamation of humor.

My 2 cents--to each his/her own obviously.

I agree with your Mighty Boosh wishes :)

Also, Pauly had one good point. CALLERS. I called in to the first RSS live broadcast w/ my number 1 pal Joe and we RLLY bombed. It was pretty brutal. Point is, let's bring that back. Or maybe don't mess with the format, IDK. If H + S could just engineer my G D career that would be nice.

I loved how off the wall this episode was. S&H are good enough improvisors that they can handle anything. And while Mr. Shore was hilarious it would be good if they could stick to UCB people as much as possible.

Pauly is a gnarly dude with an original personality. Who cares how aware he is. He's just trying to break into this podcast mediascape like the rest of us. For somebody who grew up around Hollywood and wise-ass comics his whole life, I think he's alright. Besides, H&S had to play it cool in order to get to the real gold: The Weasel speak. Sean got a bit of one-on-one coaching on how to talk like the Weas- uhl. Buud- ie. Pretty dope.

I feel like I "get" Pauly.

Umm...sex scenes, let's see....

Sleepaway Camp II. Tons of great sex scenes featuring a girl with dream boobs.

Fear's rollercoaster fingering. Don't know that I liked it, but it certainly broadened my horizons.

Any and all softcore porn at my grandma's trailer.

Oh, hey guys, have Megan Amram on. Don't fight me on this.

I don't know if she would be good for this podcast but she probably would be because she is very funny. But I only know of her as a writer not an improver

Is writers is funny too? I heard Sean wrote the Grumpy Cat Saves Christmas Special and he seems like a funny dude.

I wonder if Ms Amram needs her own Grumpy Cat before she can graduate to podcast.

You're right and speaking on improvers, they should have Tim Allen on. He's the best Home Improver, and I think he could transition to a studio environment pretty well.

Yeah, I wasn't advocating against getting big name guests, just belligerently pointing out some of the cons. Bringing in new listeners is super important, and I'm confident that S & H can carry the weight of making it hilarious no matter what. I do hate when things get genuinely uncomfortable, but I'm atypically weird about it, and it hasn't been really all that bad in any episode so far. I was a little nervous about the Sinbad episode but it was fricken' fantastic. Also if you guys warn me I can skip past the scary parts.

...also if you guys only had Andy Kneis on as a guest every single week I would support that creative decision as well. It's a joke but I'm also serious about it. Because I like Andy Kneis and his Astrovan a lot. And he's great. Just saying.

As for sex scenes, I paused Sahara (2005) when Penelope Cruz got pushed over in the sand because I thought I spotted some nip. I wasn't wrong.
