Musical Mondays Off-Week 5 (Cam Bert's Pick)

Recommended Posts

(Also I digress but there's gotta be a Book of Mormon movie deal in the works, right???)

With the massive success of Hamilton and La La Land's win (I'm calling it early) it wouldn't surprise me if studios aren't in a rush to get any big musical to the screen.

AH! Good choice!!! I've only ever gotten to see this once and it was actually when my uncle played guitar in the orchestra when the University of North Texas put this on. It was still amazing and I can't wait to watch this!

My association with JCS is similar - I was a stage hand on a production back home in Australia as a favour to my friend who was stage managing it. I hauled sets and managed props and all that junk, and learned every single word of the show in the process. Oh, and Tim Minchin played Pilate in that production.

I can see him playing that. I could also see him having a lot of fun as King Herod as well, which for me is the most scene ,nay, show stealing-est role in the entire musical.

Yes! I'm really excited about this one (although I still think you should have made us watch Tokyo Tribe...). I know very little about this one except that my super religious parents wouldn't let me see it when I was younger because it was "blasphemous."

That's interesting, because my wife's super religious parents insisted they all watch this (and Godspell) because it was a good pop-culture way in to the gospels. We had a long discussion this morning about whether we should sit our five and seven year olds down to watch this. We haven't settled on an answer yet - she seems to think it won't hold their attention and it's confusing. I think they'll be fine (aside from the crucifixion, although it's not as scary in this film as in the still-with-me trauma of the 'Godspell' crucifixion.)

Fuck yes I fucking love this movie. I grew up Catholic and this was the first musical I saw live (at the age of ten), so this movie is all up in my cinematic DNA. I saw it shortly after seeing the live show and found it drastically different but I still loved it. It felt like the musical was still struggling to find its identity (as opposed to the very polished stage show I saw) and it found it by going to fucking Israel and putting on a Big Time Hippie Sing-along. It's kind of beautiful.

I hope this is good. In 5th grade, our music teacher took us to see a stage version. I don't remember much, except thinking how odd it was that these people from biblical times were wearing leather pants.

I loved the original cast recording (Broadway I think? with the brown and yellow cover) and saw a University of Michigan stage production. I've never seen the movie so I'm looking forward to this. I have heard enough good things about it that this probably would be considered Norman Jewison's masterwork if he hadn't made Fiddler on the Roof.

I'm not sure if I have seen the movie in it's entirety. But I know I've seen parts/ chunks of it a couple times... since I remember when I was a kid / early teen my dad would put it on anytime he noticed a cable channel was playing it.

Know I've seen a majority of it but idk if I've seen from start to finish. Excited to watch, and will be interesting to see how much of it I remember.

I grew up non-religious. My parents were basically "we believe what we believe and you can follow whatever path is right for you" so I had no religious connection to this movie. What I did have is a mother who saw this movie when she was twenty and fall in love with Ted Neeley who also feel in love with the music. When I see younger photos of my father there is a similarity which just makes things a little weird...

I really do you hope you enjoy this. I'm telling you the voices on the movie cast are incredible, so you can at least turn a blind eye to hippies in the desert and enjoy some fantastic vocal work.

There is a horrible quality version on YouTube if you really want to watch it but getting it is an issue,

I think that's part of what makes this movie great. Religious or non-religious, Catholic or Jew, the songs in this are undeniably great. Plus, we all can get lost Ted Neeley's crystal dream eyes and feel just how hard Mary Magdalene and Jesus WANNA BONE.

Also, it's the 1970s, brothers and sisters!

Desert hippies are some of my favorite type of hippies.

I'm watching the movie tomorrow morning, but I was going through the soundtrack and I swear, "What's That Buzz" is amazing! The Electric Mayham has never sounded better.

This just wrecked me. People at the coffeeshop looked at me like I was possessed due to my literal laughing out loud.

15 minutes in and loving this re-watch, and I thought I would flag a point that always heightens my enjoyment of this film:

The actor who plays Peter is played by a guy called Philip Toibus, he of the mighty lion's mane haircut:

He may be familiar to reality television viewers or people into filth (or both, whatever floats your boat) because after this film Philip became Paul Thomas, legendary pornstar. He's mostly famous now for being a director, and was on a porn-centric reality show years ago. Anyway, always makes me laugh seeing him in there.

I grew up Catholic but was never really devout, so I avoided faith-based stuff. We stopped going to church when I was in Grade 7.

I remember watching this for the first time in high school on MuchMoreMusic Easter weekend. I remember having an initial aversion to watching it, simply because I thought it was a legit "churchy" movie. I thought it was more "faithful" to the Bible because the bumper before the movie talked about the controversy of Peaches doing a cover album/concert and calling it "Peaches Christ Superstar".

Boy, was I wrong.

OMG as in the drag star!? She just did a production of Beetlejuice: The Peaches Christ Experience with Bianca Del Rio in San Francisco and I hate that I didn't get to see it!
