Episode 129 - The Apple: LIVE!

in the course of half a song Alphie grows a beard and starts looking like Will Ferrell. Bananas.

Also, good to see the pointy shouldered suits stayed in style...

More cowbell. Or apfel. And I don't care if the excuse is she's been with us over a year. Fine, call it 23 months. Minus 9 months of pregnancy. That kid should be no more than 6 - 14 months or so and it's easily 3 years old.

Does anyone else get a sense of irrational excitement from the from prospect of a new HDTGM episode coming up and not having a clue of what it might be?

I enjoy the live episodes, but we always know what they're going to be weeks in advance. And, for the most part, once one has been released, you know the second is going to follow shortly after. But I have to say, there's something about the anticipation of what movie will be next, and eagerly waiting for that mini-ep to drop to find out what it will be, that I find genuinely appealing.

As an adult, it's probably the closest thing to that feeling I had as a child on Christmas morning. Which is all to say, I love this show, and perhaps, my life's a little sad...but only just a little.

I had this exact revelation today. I really get excited with the prospect of an unknown movie.

Paul, you were correct in thinking that there was a deeper message in this movie, that the enormous "apple" was too obvious. I think you realized this, but saw how much fun June and Jason were having mocking you, so you played dumb.

They completely misinterpreted this movie. Let me cut to the chase: Topps was the devil and Boogalow was God. The BIM represented the church striving for theocracy. Here are some clues the movie laid out for you. The clues you, Paul, saw and June and Jason ignored.

1) Crappy music pushed by BIM. That is the church, no doubt. Not even a question. Churches are all about bad music.

2) Mr. Topps associated with the hippies. sounds like the devil. Hippies are awful. Communes are hell on earth.

3) People mindlessly following BIM and wearing the "mark" of BIM. Absolutely the church. Just think of what happened this week - Ash Wednesday.

There are countless other examples, but the most blatant, in your face, proof that June and Jason were dead wrong and should bow to your higher intellect is at the end of the movie when Boogalow asks his guard stop Topps from leaving, It is Topps who stops him from doing so, controlling his mind, CONTROLLING HIS FREE WILL. If Topps were God, he never would have take the guard's free will away, that's religion 101. Crappy music and free will.

Tell me I'm wrong. Tell me this movie is not about the church conquering the devil and sending him away to another planet.

I'm digressing now because it's Thursday and I'm crazy excited to see Deadpool tonight!

Anyone else getting the chance to see it?

The track Where Has the Love Gone lifts the melody straight from ELO's Look at Me Now from their 1971 debut.

You know I value your opinion, so you'll have to tell me what you think. It seems to be getting good reviews, I just don't know if this take matches my head canon for Deadpool. Like, on the one hand, I like that it got the R-rating so they can go all out on the violence, but I'm concerned they thought, "Well, it's rated R, what else can we get in here?"

My favorite runs of Deadpool (and granted, I have not had a chance to read Posehn and Duggan's run), have been funny and crazy, but never to the degree that I feel like his movie HAS to be Rated R. I don't know, it feels kind of like American Pie or Van Wilder with swords, and I just don't think that kind of humor does it for me anymore.

However, I recently read in an interview that Paul's been trying to pair HDTGM eps with big releases (e.g. The Holiday Special w/ TFA, and Star Trek V w/ Star Trek Beyond), so maybe this means we'll get X-Men Origins: Wolverine or X-Men: The Last Stand for next week. Because, dammit, I've got some shit to say about both of those movies...

I'm seeing it tonight, but I'm mostly excited about the movie coming out so that maybe the Disney Marvel marketing machine will shut the fuck up soon. I was looking forward to the movie, but I'm kind of tired of seeing it everywhere. But then again, people said the same thing about Episode VII, and it never rubbed me the wrong way. So it's probably just a thing with me. (I'm also seeing Where to Invade Next, and I'm honestly a bit more excited for that, despite my conflicted feelings about Michael Moore)

I would love that! Also, when BvS comes out, can we do Superman IV: The Quest for Peace?

To be fair, it's Marvel Fox behind this one. Marvel doesn't do nearly as much promotion for their non-in-house movies. They'll use it to push the books, but I they're not exactly going "Go see Deadpool!" on their website or anything.

Yeah, I realized that, like, five minutes after I wrote it. I've just seen Deadpool EVERYWHERE for the last couple weeks.

I get what you're saying 100%. I am not well versed in Deadpool comic canon so I'm not sure if I'll even be able to ease your mind once I've seen the movie on that front. I just know how he acts when appearing in other characters' arcs and it seems like they're gonna be quite true to his personality for sure. The MPAA wants to shove 'R' ratings at the littlest things and so I feel like to truly get the Deadpool that we even know in comics this has to be an 'R'. He wouldn't go around saying "shoot" or "fudge" just to keep them at PG-13. Like it's so odd to me that we can probably keep the same amount of violence but oh my goodness if he says "fuck" more than once all hell is breaking loose!

But if it's lame y'all better bet I am jumping on here and blasting it the fuck off to save y'all the trouble. But I'm really optimistic that won't be necessary.

Speaking of toning it down, I hope they've had the foresight to do an incredibly nonsensical ADR job for the edited-for-TV version.

Love this podcast, glad June is finally back on an episode, I really don't think the live episodes are very good tho....it'd so much more magical in studio, but I realize they get the money doing it live. Been to two live shows, loved the experience. But not fun to listen to....been months since a good episode was released....

Only if it's better than this

That's actually pretty tremendous. For me, the gold standard will always be "Scarface" though, as far as edited movies I'd still watch all the way through.

I think my favorite was always the Die Hard movies because of the "Yippee Ki Yay" line. I only I remember exactly is that they changed a character's name in Die Hard 2 to "Mr Falcon" solely for the purpose of using the line, "Yippei Ki Yay, Mister Falcon."

But the most baffling one is Casino.

They changed the line "you Jew motherfucker, you" to "you Jew money-lover, you," which is arguably WAY more offensive than the original.

Well, I tried but I simply can't find this film to watch. I only have UK Amazon Prime and Netflix, and the subscriptions don't cross over to the US stores. None of the usual dodgy links work so I'm going to have to give this a miss.

However, in a vain attempt to create a "motif" for my presence on these threads...

Hello, early eighties Catherine Mary Stewart!

Actually, fuck it. Also, hello, early eighties Miriam Margolyes

Ippy ky - yay kemo-sabe was the version of Die Hard we used to get here in the UK.

In Lethal Weapon the bad guys were a bunch of muddy funsters.

And an edited-for-Kuwait version of Robocop (long story) Murphy was a "mean mother-crusher," the robber firing his shotgun in the convenience store might have been saying "fcuk off" with his lips, but was saying "why me?" on the soundtrack. And my favourite was when someone accused of saying something preposterous or wrong was met with a cry of BULL-derdash!

Sorry for the hiatus, this will be long. I apologize for nothing.

For comparisons sake, I went ahead and looked up what the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1994.

The Top 10 were:

1) Ace of Base--"The Sign"

2) All-4-One--"I Swear"

3) Boys II Men--"I'll Make Love to You"

4) Celine Dion--"The Power of Love" (I'm assuming this is not her cover of Huey Lewis and the News)

5) Mariah Carey--"Hero"

6) Lisa Loeb and Nine Stories--"Stay (I Miss You)

7) Toni Braxton--"Breathe Again"

8) Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart, Sting--"All for Love"

9) Ace of Base--"All That She Wants"

10) Ace of Base--"Don't Turn Around"

Ace of Base was literally my childhood. I grew up to my mom blasting that CD every cleaning day, sometimes interspersed with ABBA Gold. It is untouchable to hate.

Are we finding out that Cameron H has terrible judgement on 90s music?

Next you're gonna tell me you hate Torn

Another reason why tayloranne is my girl

As long as we're now on the subject of TV edits, does anyone have any films they grew up watching only in the tv edited version and were surprised when they saw it as an adult?

I grew up with a copy of Ghostbusters that my parents had recorded off of TV. I was a bit surprised that the line "It's true. This man is a rodent; I don't know which..." was actually "It's true. This man has no dick" when I bought the DVDs in my 20s. Also, the clip in the montage where a ghost unbuttons Ray's pants was obviously missing from the version I grew up on as well.

Edit: EllenM, we miss you when you're gone, but it's acceptable as long as you return with a post like that every time.
