Re: The Prequels. Paul on how great Clone Wars and reflecting on the Prequel movies says "Lucas should have made a tv series". That WAS the plan. Around the time of Special Editions, Lucas did pitch a Star Wars series to HBO. At the time, HBO would have been the only network that both had the money and would allow the series to be non-kiddie. Lucas was envious of Babylon 5 having the luxury of doing a 5 year story arc to develop its characters. For instance, the character of Mollari was generally hated by fans the first season because he was seen as a buffoon and a weak attempt at comic relief. But over five years he went through an incredible arc where the character took an opportunity to grab power and set in motion the downfall of the galaxy. He evolved into a tragic figure and a fan favorite. But if B5 only had three movies to develop that character (while still dealing with the main plot and characters) the evolution just wouldn't have worked. In retrospect, you can see Lucas had a similar story arc planned for Jar Jar Binks, but simply too little time to develop it into something meaningful (I mean, Jar Jar did basically enable Palpatine to seize power and after Revenge of the Sith probably put a blaster in his mouth). In that original pitch to HBO, after each season there would be a big theatrical movie for key moments in the Clone Wars- stuff that was too expensive to justify in a series like gigantic battles and climatic confrontations. They would serve as sort of cliff hangers for the next season when a time jump could occur. Anyway, the HBO execs at the time didn't think a sci-fantasy series revolving around politics, intrigue, shifting alliances, universe-building, and character development would have mass appeal (*cough* Game of Thrones) and passed. Lucas went to plan B, started making the Prequel movies, but kept trying to get a "dark, gritty" live action Star Wars series off the ground at every break. A lot of material developed for these different series was used in the animated Clone Wars.

Yeah, some of us raised this point in a different thread. A lot of comedies—especially “edgy” ones—rely on gay panic or other problematic issues for laughs. That didn’t really start changing until maybe the last five years, approximately. The same goes for anything that uses “edgy” humor, which includes this podcast. I also have Stitcher and have listened to the back episodes and have thought “oof, that wouldn’t fly today” in parts (since I work in special ed, I remember Jason used to say “retarded” semi-frequently. I would just roll my eyes and acknowledge that it was a different time period). Having said that, they have changed with the times and a lot of those older episodes are still very funny—you just have to be ready for those moments where the comedy risks being offensive and decide whether or not it’s still worth listening to.

Since we're opening up to foreign films now, I'll also throw in Only Yesterday and Ocean Waves. They are two lesser known Studio Ghibli movies that are worth your time. Only Yesterday is in contention for best Ghibli movie in my mind.

Maybe it's just because they are very recent films, but I like Lady Bird, Eighth Grade, Booksmart, and Edge Of Seventeen. I think Superbad does this list but I've kind of soured on it over the years. I'm kind of surprised their list doesn't include The Breakfast Club. The Diary Of A Teenage Girl is a great coming of age movie but significantly less school focused than it seems Unspooled is going for right now.

I am listening to the backlog from the very beginning of HDTGM, and some of it has NoT aged well.

Uhh no, neither of those, I just meant 'reconsider' as in the same way we reconsidered all 100 of the AFI movies. Wasn't that one of the points of the last 100 weeks? And turns out, they only thought like half of them were still great, so it's worth doing. I'm sure 400 Blows will come out positively, but it's still worth taking a look through new, modern eyes. And your automatic shrug to Mean Girls is why it should be looked at and I think the point of season 2. Let's also look for movies that aren't traditionally filling out the role of 'greatness', and see before we decide? Maybe there's room for new definitions. Mean Girls is very popular, influential, made into a musical, etc. Maybe it satisfies, maybe it doesn't, worth a discussion. Why is it not an equal to 400 Blows? Who says? Break down those traditional definitions.

There are a number of HDTGM movies on this list. To me, the only movies that are truly bad are ones that are hateful//hurtful/offensive towards a group of people, or boring.
