It's been a long time since I originally saw this movie, but at the time I remember being amused that Kris Kristofferson seemed to have gone straight from a fishing trip to a dance competition, fully dressed in a tuxedo -- something he had definitely not planned on doing when he originally went fishing. So was he carrying a tux in his tackle box?

Oh, at my old dance studio, there were weekly "parties" as well. It's more of a get together to dance. Basically anyone can show up - they had salsa nights, tango nights, etc. It's good for people who don't have dance partners, because people rotate and often instructor-assisted.

I went in knowing there was a twist but having no idea what this movie was even about. I was almost enjoying it as a verrry melodramatic morality tale and appreciating how dumb these characters were...then the twist happens and I. was. pissed.

I turned to my boyfriend at one point while we were watching this and I said "oh man I can't wait to hear what June says about this movie."

During the discussion of Virtuosity it was brought up that both the main stars of the film were A-list Oscar winners and the question was brought up if this film had the most Oscar recipients. So I decided to start compiling a list of nominees and winners in HDTGM films. Names that I looked at were the actors, director, producers, and writers, but those names may not have won in those categories i.e. Justin Timberlake being nominated for Best Song but he acted in The Love Guru. If a person has both won an Oscar but has been nominated other times, I am only listing the win. I'm about 1/6th the way through the episode list, but will be continually working on it. Burlesque Nominated –Stanley Tucci for Lovely Bones Winner – Cher for Moonstruck Season of the Witch Winner – Nicolas Cage for Leaving Las Vegas Old Dogs Nominated – John Travolta for Saturday Night Fever and Pulp Fiction Matt Dillon for Crash Winner – Robin Williams for Good Will Hunting Last Airbender Nominated – M. Even crazier is he’s fishing in Texas and the competition is in Las Vegas

So Kris Kristofferson and Chayanne playing father and son, I don't quite get the resemblance.

So did you end up punching the bear or lying down on the green?
  12. 1 point
True story of today: I was about to tee off a round of golf this morning when a yearling bear ran across the course, and they closed the course for the day while they tried to catch it. But I instantly remembered "Black, fight back. Brown, lay down." Thanks, June. That'll be in my head forever now, and it might've saved my life today.

I used to really love this movie when I watched it as a kid, but I recently caught it on TV and it is wild. Characters disappear for large portions of the movie. The narration is absolutely pointless. I also think June will really like this one. https://www.justwatch.com/us/search?q=soul food

Huh. Maybe it is better to go in knowing the twist (is it a twist or a reveal?). Because I was like, when are they gonna get to the nonsense????? Hurry up!

Yes! And if we build that wall it'll keep Chads like him from Cuba out of America for good. MAGA!

I liked it as a kid too, but all I can remember is a couple fucks in the bathroom at one point. My bigger question is why did my mom own this movie on VHS in 1998? Seems out of character for a 40 year old white woman at the time and I dig it.

So this was release straight to Netflix here in Japan and was dying to watch it after hearing how poorly it did and how crazy it was. My co-worker also watched it and had many thoughts so I'll have to ask them for some C&Os as well. Also apologies to @DannytheWall I didn't realize until hearing the episode that I wrote basically the same thing as you. I had a busy week, and must have read it and forgot about it but it was rattling around in my mind.

The walkman wasn't invented until 1979. You can't fault him too much for playing the radio on the bus. I guess it depends how loud he was listening to it. The flashback editing (associating memories with what they're seeing) seems to ape Resnais' style in at least Hiroshima mon Amour (1959) - though by the end you do get the full expository, traditional, flashback. I'd have to rewatch Muriel (1963); Je t'aime, je t'aime (1968) and Last Year in Marienbad (1961) to see if he also did that exact same technique in there. I want to say yes on Muriel. For Je t'aime, je t'aime think the flashbacks were more traditional in the transition (since there was a scientific device for time travel, so technically not flashbacks. Though they did separate other experimental things, such as change the actress who played his wife in different scenes, IIRC). And I don't think Marienbad had flashbacks. That said, I think the flashbacks were the most interesting part of the movie. That and the scenes of Buck's initial homelessness. And the transition from being a fake Texan coming to New York, to looking like he might be a fake New Yorker coming to Miami. I felt the stream of consciousness fantasy for Dustin Hoffman in Miami went on for too long, but overall my two biggest issues were raised in the Ebert review. 1. If you were to excise the flashbacks from the movie, you would barely have any indication that Joe Buck suffered what should have been an incredibly traumatic event. Like, in anything, like mannerisms... anything. The best explanation I could come up with was, he didn't know how to emotionally handle it, and just really, really repressed it, which makes the violence at the end actually make more sense. He would just be kind of not emotionally right inside in terms of violence, but gets by day to day in denial about everything (and not thinking about it). 2. I don't really get why him and Ratzo really bonded over anything other than being in proximity and time passed. And the next big issue is just, the turn of events by getting invited to the party just felt like such a sudden change of fortune, it seemed jarring, and not in the intended way. Though that's less of a fundamental problem I had than the previous two. I enjoyed this movie a fair amount actually. Listening to the episode afterwards though, hearing Ebert emphasize the problems I did have with it, makes me more iffy on saying yes or no if I'd put it on my hypothetical ballot for the list. That said, I liked it better as a movie than probably most things we've seen so far. But not Taxi Driver. Or Apocalypse Now. ETA: On the Overlook feedback, Paul said he didn't know if TCM was too... something (unpolished?) to be on the list. Maybe, compared to what else in on the list, but fwiw it's #183 on the BFI sight & sound critics list (The Shining and Don't Look Now are also somewhere in the 101-200 range. The Exorcist didn't get many mentions in the poll/i.e. low spot on the list).

I have no idea what (this) Serenity is about beyond what Paul mentioned in the mini-EP. I am going in cold! I'll try to keep it that way

I'm not sure if June will ever forgive Paul for Serenity. It's ROUGH

Thanks, Elektra! Honestly, I’m less thrilled about the win (although that’s also very nice), and more about making Paul laugh. That’s the real trophy To be honest, I agree with Paul. Last weeks C&O’s were really, really good. I’m proud of everyone!

Congratulations to Cameron for being back on top. I liked it when forum posters win and not those LOSER call-in people. I am excited for SERENITY. I feel a little responsible since I suggested it in the bad movie recommendation threads. I'll be curious to see what people who have never heard anything about it think is going on. I, unfortunately, only saw it after reading about it. So I was spoiled. IF anyone went in cold, I want to hear your thoughts.

I love how Paul has incorporated Cody and Devin into the mini-episodes. It’s nice to have their insight as well. Also, just like Paul I grew up with tomato/mayonnaise sandwiches. They are great. Tomatoes are delicious. However, I’m sorry Kraft, but I will never, ever, ever eat one of your weird hybrid flavors. First of all, I think it’s kind of lazy. What, I can’t be bothered to squeeze two different bottles? Get out of here with that shit! Americans need to be more active! And secondly, I’m not sure I trust your ratios. If you put too much ketchup or BBQ sauce or whatever your whole sandwich is gonna be totally fucked. There’s an art to condiments. You can’t just wing it! Also, Ranch is fucking disgusting. You think adding ketchup is going to somehow make that horror show edible? Get the fuck out of here...

This movie is a classic, it taught me all about the dangers of diabetes. RIP Big Mama. Never watched the TV show though.
