I really thought it was the other way around, going into this. Either way, what fun! Probably my favorite musical.

I respectfully disagree on this. I see Green Book as not just tone deaf, but actively rewriting history in a way that perpetuates stereotypes, and sees Dr. Shirley as less than a fully-developed and nuanced person beyond a caricature. Ali's acting was great, but I'm forever soured on Viggo Mortensen. I don't think he did a great job. I don't think it was a stretch to play a loud, Italian thug. To say nothing of the Hollywood Reporter round table that was making the rounds. This whole project was a mess. Dr. Shirley actively turned down the opportunity in taking part in the movie during his lifetime. It's more than just a bunch of oafs making a tone-deaf movie. I'm not going to get down on anyone for finding it enjoyable, but for me, its problems outweigh its pleasures.

Well this is interesting. Last week I rented the movie on Vudu because it didn't seem to be available anywhere else I could easily access. I bought it on Vudu and viola, thanks to the magic of license sharing, I now can access the movie on Amazon and Movies Anywhere as well! This is cool!

It actually wasn't a terrible watch. I got more enjoyment out of it than Dragon Blade. I may or may not have gotten teary-eyed when they kiss on the tarmac.

I don't know, I think when people criticize Mortensen they are really criticizing the character as written more than the actor's performance. Personally, I think he did a great job playing a character who is written as a loud Italian thug; I don't think I've ever seen him play a character like that before. That doesn't mean I like that his character is given so much of the movie's focus, but that's a different question.

Some of what I've read recently (and this is anecdotal Twitter speculation, so take it with a grain of salt) is that there were basically two camps in the Oscar voting: the older voters who preferred Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody, and the younger voters who favored Roma and Black Panther. This kind of voting split has existed since the Academy membership was expanded, but this year there wasn't anything that both groups could kind of get behind, like The Shape of Water or Moonlight/La La Land. A Star Is Born might have actually managed it, but they botched their campaign and didn't start trying until it was too late. So you saw the weird bifurcated awards, given about equally to both groups of movies. So yeah, national politics is reflected in the Oscars as well, in a slightly different form.

I think that’s what makes me most hesitant about buying it. I just don’t think it’s going to be a fun watch. And, from a forum perspective, I think it’s going to be a lot of bad acting and visuals, which aren’t especially easy to comment on here. It’s further complicated by the fact that it’s a “true story.” Anything weird, continuity or logic-wise, that we’d usually speculate or comment on is going to be easily answered with a quick Google search. (“Did that happen? Oh, it did and here’s the context? Oh, okay. Cool ) Like, I think it’s going to be a fun episode to listen to, because they can get into the visual and acting stuff better than we can, but I suspect the forums are going to be pretty much tumbleweeds next week. Maybe not, but that’s my guess.

I'm somewhere in between you and Taylor on this one, but I will say that I believe even just one instance of being objectively super fucking racist should ensure that nothing you have to say about race relations gets taken seriously. Not to be overly cliché, but no one but him truly knows what's in his heart, and if he's sincere about his apology, then good for him. But bad on everyone who funded this movie, campaigned for this movie, and voted for this movie, because I don't believe he's earned a platform to talk about racism. It's hard enough today to see any white people make clunky films about race (again, talking about the egregious win by Skin in live-action short) that if in addition, the filmmaker is in any way racist, let's just not have that film financed, okay?

I was totally taken with Annie and "Dream Operator". I'm disappointed she disappeared after the dinner. Spalding came back but I don't remember her or the kids coming back. I did laugh at them not talking to each other directly. I liked how The Narrator emphasized that. Something like "They haven't talked to each other in years." then realizing what that implies, adding "Not directly anyway." I started watching the movie at 9:30 p.m. and it was so slow at the beginning I wound up turning it off during Spalding's dinner-table sermon. I picked it back up from the beginning the next day and am glad I did. I went ahead and bought the movie because I am sure I will watch it again. It's one you can put on and "listen" to while doing other things and you kind of watch the movie in your mind. Dream Operator is still my favorite song with Wild, Wild Life second. I didn't even get that it was John Goodman until he got up on stage. Also, were all the songs previously written and used here or were they written for this movie? I saw Wild Wild Life on Youtube as an official video and it was just the movie without the DJ's intro. In the credits every song seemed to be listed as a video so I got confused (easily done, but still).

Since I know we're all mega comedy fans I wanted to mention the passing of Brody Stevens Every time I heard him on a podcast he was fucking hilarious and beaming with positivity and everything sucks now that he's gone. Paul made a very beautiful post about him on his Instagram so I highly recommend checking that out (I still don't know how to properly bring things over to here very well). Death sucks and I'm sorry that all my favorites lost such a great light in their lives.

Honestly as a watcher of shitty lifetime movies, this is just that a shitty lifetime movie. It doesnt need to be a parody. I can only imagine the glee the two of them had when they decided to do this project for how much it would fuck with peoples preconceptions. Its fun to watch for me just for how stupid the plot is and how jarring it is to see both Wiig and Ferrell play the roles with zero humor to them.
